Clive Roberts (1944?-2020)
Translation from the report at BBC Cymru ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/cymrufyw/55423886 ) (as I haven't been able to find a report in English yet): "The actor Clive Roberts has died, aged 76. He was best known for playing the part of George in the popular comedy series 'Fo A Fe'. In 1990, he was convicte...

Re: "The Burke Special"
I would love to see the one again when the whole audience suddenly jumped up in the middle of the programme and started singing - except for one poor man, who'd been deliberately left out of the rehearsal. They replayed his reactions in slow motion as he gradually rose to his feet and tried to join...

Re: Members past and present
I think it's just that internet habits have changed down the years. I remember the heyday of Usenet and how, for instance, alt.fan.pratchett used to have so many posts in a day that it was often difficult to keep up. Now, there may be no more than twenty or thirty 'legit' posts in a whole year . Wit...

Another part of my childhood/teen years falls away. Interesting what you say Mr_Wolf ( and why are you in red, by the way? Absolute Legend! So many wonderful shows and appearances, strangely one thing I always think of him for, was that 'Keep Britain Tidy' PIF, where he joins the youngsters against Litter! Also a lovely early appearance in one of the surviving episodes of "Our House", inadvertently on the receiving end...

Re: Clive James's Postcard from ...
"...in Paris he was a passenger in a speeding car..." Driven by the novelist Françoise Sagan, if I recall correctly, and it wasn't so much 'speeding' as 'being driven recklessly'. There was a shunt at some point, I think. There was an earlier series on a similar concept called "Clive James In..." ,...

Re: Best quote or moment from "The Goodies"?
Not a line, nor a moment, but an entire episode. At the age of 13 or so, I was as full of irrational prejudices as any working-class boy of that age. I always watched The Goodies . So I settled in front of the family box one evening for the latest offering... ...to be met with the (in)famous 'South ...

Some place names are just intrinsically funny. 'Catford' is just an example (in one of Milligna's memoirs, a fellow-soldier says, "Christ, I must be bored. I just thought of Catford" . I remember a Mike & Bernie Winters sketch where Bernie is playing a suitably gormless British soldier in WW1 who is...

Re: Programmes that kept going for no real reason
I agree about LOTSW which - to my tastes, at least - stopped being funny in about 1984. There's also the matter of institutional culture or just plain inertia to consider. I think it was the late Rob Buckman who said that if World War II had been under the control of one of the American networks it ...

A giant figure (at times literally). His television criticism for the Observer was not only pioneering but remains essential reading to this very day.

Re: Favourite tale from the days of regional ITV?
One of my favourites that I vaguely remember hearing somewhere was a story about ATV transmission. I think it was when ATV was at Aston Cross in Birmingham. The story goes that they were screening a late-night film when one of the transmission team noticed that they could see through the window int...

This may be apocryphal, but I recall someone claiming that in the run-up to the 1980 US election, Walden topped the programme by saying that there was going to be an interview with, "Pwesident Carter's Wepublican Wival Wonald Weagan".

Re: Michael O'Donnell (1928-2019)
Oh that's very sad news. I'm surprised there hasn't been an obituary on Radio 4 as I'm sure many listeners remember him well. The people running R4 nowadays don't seem to be too bothered when it comes to the station's legacy. On top of which, it took the Graun nearly six weeks to publish an obit.
