Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Byron you mean? Well, yes he was a bit of an arse. Although, from what I've seen elsewhere it's been framed as a modern, PC thing. I'm not entirely convinced that you can use an historical character in that context. That aside it was a cracking episode I thought. Although, I must admit I'm still wai...

Re: "The Stranger" - early Australian sci-fi rediscovered

Well, it's interesting, I'll give you that. Shades of An Unearthly Child. But what on earth was going on with the editing. You constantly think bits of the story are missing. But then you imagine they were never made, because they then have to recap the leaps in the plot in the next scene. It's very...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Well, here we all are. It's been a while. This new series is a bit of a curates egg, isn't it? I really do think they have made more of an effort. But I think people are losing interest in it. Every time they build it up, and generate a bit of a buzz, but it's just so tired. With the best will in th...

Yes, the sonic is a bit of a boo, boo. What were they thinking? Not wildly excited by the trailer. I think they've been extra careful to the point that it doesn't actually feel like Who at all.

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

My own feeling is that it will fall between two stools. At least initially. Yes, it's a woman, but it's still Doctor Who and probably upset the purists while disappointing the feminists.

Re: Killed Off!

I always remember them killing off Valerie Barlow in Coronation Street particularly vividly. Well, I say vivid. You didn't actually see a lot. Just her grasping the exposed plug socket. I always thought it was a bit disappointing at the time. The papers were full of it, so I was expecting a little m...

Re: It's the cops wot dunnit!

It can be well done. I always say Hinterland, because I very seldom watch any of the above. In this case the hints had been there throughout. Prosser always was a bad un. I don't think there is any agenda to it though. It's poor drama. Crime drama seems essentially generic anyway and TV always falls...

Quatermass had a sort of charm. But I'm not sure how they would square a British rocket programme with the modern world. Never mind transplanting it to Canada.

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

I'm afraid all this politicising has left me rather cynical. I could well believe they would make Bradley Walsh a new companion. A right on woman Doctor would enjoy ridiculing a middle aged, white male. We are responsible for all the worlds evils after all.

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Probably a lot of truth in that. They have courted apathy with their delays and production breaks. That and a Doctor who was a good idea in theory, but probably hasn't caught the public's imagination. Go too far with the Moffatiness and the backlash is stories about Emojibots. There is the hint of a...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Well, that was more like it. I enjoyed Oxygen a lot. A snappy and well written script. A bit of humour, some nasty bits and even a cautionary message that wasn't so obvious that it bludgeoned you over the head. Pity they wasted several episodes to get here.

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Another low key episode I thought. Be interesting to know what the fans made of it. What I saw of the last series was pretty bland, and yet they raved over it. This seems to be more of the same. I'm just not getting any buzz or excitement from it I'm afraid.

Re: Time Team - extended episode

Very curious. I can't honestly remember what it ran to on C4. It may have been longer than an hour. Which I would have thought was about right for a special. They always seemed a bit thin without the regulars. Possibly that might push it up to 80 minutes or thereabouts. But I also seem to remember t...

I thought it was entertaining enough. I quite liked Bill. She seemed more realistic than Moffat's fantasy smart arsed two dimensional Clara. Just goes to show really. You've got to have characters people actually like.

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

I've just seen the cinema style poster for the story. I presume it's the real deal. Looks like it's going to be the complete history of the Cybermen. These stories are best avoided, in my opinion, as you just know it will be a steaming pile of dog do and upset just about everybody. But Moffatt seems...

Re: Sherlock Series 4

I think a lot of film/TV are like jokes. Very good the first time you hear them. But really when they are done they are done. That certainly seems to be the case with Sherlock. An excellent idea for the first couple of series. New material required for sure.

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

I didn't mind it, I have to say. I quite like comics, so that was fun. In fact more fun than the Doctor who seems to have settled down into a generic Doctor mould. I think all the angst has really run its course and doesn't interest me a great deal. Looks like we're back to hoodie Doctor next year a...

I think they must have spent all their money on animating the Daleks. They do look good. The rest of it looks amateur to be frank. That's about the kindest thing I can say about it. It won't be on my Christmas list.

Well I mostly grew up with Pertwee and Baker and still have a great deal of affection for them. But really how many times can you escape and be captured? The stories didn't really go anywhere most of the time. I actually prefered Nu Who under RTD when the stories were well written, concise and didn'...

No, he might not have found it yet. I'm not going to rush out and buy this one. I think I'll wait and see how the animation goes down first. I couldn't even watch The Ice Warriors. Hopefully it's a step up from that.
