Re: Network?

Of course I want to read that as "we're going to release every BBC programme ever made" and they're making it easy to believe just that. "Temporarily shifted" = we're returning to TV for a considerable period (and there aren't many UK archives that could provide the materials for a long run of relea...

Re: Longer versions of signature tunes

I once came across a single with the 'Who Pays the Ferryman' tune, which was perhaps more popular over here than in the UK. It's extended to 2'38" but the bits that are in the TV version sound exactly the same. Either they recorded the full version first and the the end credits version was edited do...

Re: Which discs...

Does anyone worry about which codec they are using for this stuff, or are people just sticking to MPEG-2? When you store on a hard drive, which one do you use? B I'd love to have a hassle-free setup to record SD directly in h.264/mkv, preferably a stable standalone recorder. Trouble is, reading onl...

Re: Which discs...

I have started to back up data to BD, but that is for a different thread. I'd be interested in such a thread, as this is something I am thinking about myself. More storage on a single disc compared to DVD and (as you will know) good BD discs are supposed to last longer than good DVD's, because the ...

Re: Some questions about VHS transfer equipment

Gentlemen, I don't have much to add at present, but I do want to say thanks for the replies. Leaving tapes running from start to finish and chopping up the digital file is what I do now with a standalone DVD/hard disc recorder; sadly, the person who recorded these tapes used several machines so ther...

Some questions about VHS transfer equipment

I've recently acquired a mammoth collection of about 2,400 VHS tapes, about 80% of which contain documentaries. The majority of these I'd like to turn into digital files. It looks like I'll have to get some additional gear to do this, so now I'm investigating what's available. A few questions for th...

Re: Things you're not allowed to do on television

Trish Bertram was in LWT TX that night, and has vivid memories of the panicked talkback between the OB and Presentation. Now that would be interesting from a historical point of view - doesn't the quad standard have an additional track that's used for talkback? There's an interesting documentary wa...

Network sale

Take your pick - 33 huge box sets, nearly all £25. Some are less than a quid per disc. I have a feeling all of Edgar Wallace for that price will be especially popular here... http://networkonair.com/shop/105-sale It's not quite clear (yet) how long this sale will last, but on their facebook page Net...

BBC Four HD has started on satellite... sort of

Apologies for wasting the time of those who may spot this cross-forum posting, but this deserves to be widely known, I think. Looking for the satellite frequency of the BBC red button channel (not using a Sky or Freesat box - I have to add these things manually) I noticed the rather reliable satelli...

Looks like it. Great shame - but as I wrote earlier, a lot of uncut CBS material can be found elsewhere.

Re: CBS to stream entire Kennedy murder coverage

There were a few JFK programmes on BBC2 on Saturday evening, not a lot though and one was a short Coast item about him visiting Ireland. The ITV documentary last week was excellent if you've not seen that Radio 2 are doing a minute-by-minute on Friday evening I'd already forgotten about those. I us...

Re: Do temperature shifts matter to VCR's?

Thanks again, one for the favourites list. I'd been reading up about this particular model before I bought it, which doesn't help to buy with confidence - belts, transport mechanism, heads and electronics all can go wrong, and because this is a rather popular model people are writing about it all be...

Do temperature shifts matter to VCR's?

I have just spent the tiny sum of €30 to get my hands on one of the marvels of modern engineering, the rather wonderful Panasonic NV HS1000, a 1990s VHS recorder. Cost apparently no less than £1000 in 1994... I'm keeping it in a room that only gets heated when I'm in. During the coldest months of th...

Re: 1953 Coronation Repeat on BBC Parliament, Sunday 2 June

It would be nice to think that this new restoration could be used as the basis for VidFIRE at a future date, along with an audio cleanup to remove the optical noise. I was a bit surprised by the audio because the few examples of 35 mm BBC t/r's I've seen from this era all had magnetic audio. How co...

Re: 1953 Coronation Repeat on BBC Parliament, Sunday 2 June

Looking at the clips shown in the restoration report, the Coronation footage clearly suffers from the fact the picture goes black at every shot change. If I remember correctly it was explained somewhere this was removed from the first Quatermass as part of the DVD restoration process. It'll take som...

Like all those Kaleidoscope offerings this looks like a fascinating line up I'll never get to see because I live too far away. The reason I'm replying here is that German TV channel 3Sat frequently broadcasts 24 hours of vintage pop under the "Pop Around the Clock" banner. No idea whether this could...

Possibility of Coronation repeat?

I remember reading one of the posters here is in contact with someone who is usually responsible for BBC Parliament election repeats. I read the following quote on a satellite forum and thanks to Google I could trace it back to a facebook message posted by one Ben Johnson, who has some BBC people among his facebook contacts, so there's a good chance he isn't talking bollocks. Today's Ten O'Clock News (which happened to be preceded by a nostalgic plug for the iPlayer, full of snippets from things like Monty Python and Newsround, many of which will have been recorded at TVC) was apparently the last bulletin before the move to Broadcasting House. I somehow can't find the vinyl page on the website anymore, but IIRC it stated at least the first record would only be available on Record Store Day. When I checked the forum again half an hour ago, I saw the poster had finally replied to my message. These tapes had survived safely until...
