Re: British Australian Sitcom Spinoffs

Not quite official, I suspect, but 'Up the Convicts' was an Australian-set variation of 'Up Pompeii', with Frankie Howerd and Wallas Eaton in familiar servant and master roles.

The TV Years Christmas Special goes on sale next week. The Mark Gatiss article on 'A Ghost Story for Christmas' immediately has my attention, but it looks packed with festive goodies.

Re: Actors appearances in commercials

I have fond memories of this Terry's Chocolate orange advert from many moons ago but cannot remember the actor's name! I have always for some reason confused him with Bryan Pringle. Not alike at all but there you go! John Ringham, probably most familiar at the time as Penny's father in 'Just Good F...

Yes it was Twix with Nick Young, must be that product mix up syndrome, previously mentioned, or maybe I just preferred Breakaway, and how could I forget George Layton's VO on the Nedwell/Davies ad. Talking of comedians, ( Hancock and Hill), there's that great Texaco ad with Morecambe and Wise ( plu...

Jean-Pierre Cassel's King Louis sounding remarkably like Richard Briers in the Richard Lester Musketeers films always used to throw me, as Briers was uncredited for the dubbing.

Re: Doctor Who Classic Series and DVDs

You can tell it's a fan thing when a person lying on the floor for a few seconds gets a full credit as a body double! The body doubles also shot action footage to give the animators reference material to work from for movements in certain scenes, so Tom's body double did a little bit more than a fe...

Re: Doctor Who Classic Series and DVDs

I watched the BluRay of 'Shada' last night, and I loved it! It's put together with a lot of obvious love and care. The initial transition into animation is beautifully done and it doesn't jar when it moves from live action to animation throughout. The new model shots and inserts are lovely, with a v...

An audio recording of the 'Mystery and Imagination' version of 'The Canterville Ghost' with Bruce Forsyth and Eleanor Bron is already known to exist, alongside those of several other episodes from the first two series. 'Videos' - ie, a montage of photos while the audio plays - recently materialised ...

Thanks for this. Very enjoyable hearing a host of Holmesian clips, and a few notable Holmes actors discussing the role.

It has also been interesting looking at the archive or other 'Meridian' documentaries, as I've moved from Holmes to Terry Gilliam to ghost stories as I've browsed the list.

A lot of the horses they used on the series were used to female handlers, as I recall reading, so they costumed the handlers as it would make the filming easier and eliminate potential problems with the horses.

I don't know if it quite qualifies, as it was preceded by a two-part mini-series, but I always thought 'Murder Rooms' should have continued. Considering that when David Pirie first approached the BBC it was with the idea of them doing Sherlock Holmes and they took a different route with Bell and Con...

Couple of things. News programmes in the 70s and early 80s mentioning guerillas (why are there never any references to 'guerillas' any more?) me and my friends thought that we were fighting against apes with machineguns, much like happened in Planet of the Apes. When I was young I remember my mother seeing Marty Feldman appear on the screen and asking "Isn't that Monty Python?" My mum also thought the same thing.
