Teletext still alive !

http://www.cashaw.co.uk/20200930_213917.jpg Just reading about how the BBC is planning to re-instate it's red button service and thought I should check ! Here in Sweden the national broadcaster is still providing Teletext service. I would love to imagine that SVT has a room of ICL mainframes provid...

Re: Windsor Davies (1930-2019)

Wow, I had actually missed this. Was it not reported heavily in the media ?

At least in the 70's and 80's he was a massive presence on screen (in many ways).

Re: Dinner For One

Around 10 years ago it was a staple on the New Years Eve TV schedule here in Sweden. But for one reason or another it seems to have been dropped since then... They still show the same, ancient Donald Duck cartoon on Christmas eve, which is a bit of a tradition for them... The catchphrase "Some proce...

Re: Actors from a programme appearing in another

Corinne Skinner-Carter and Rudolph Walker both appeared as husband and wife in a 1993 episode of Lovejoy and then cropped up again as the separated couple Audrey and Patrick Trueman in Eastenders. Dianne Parish was also in the episode of Lovejoy and related to them in some way during their Eastender...

Re: 3D TV

I remember being relatively impressed at the time. We only had one set of glasses in the family, so there was much grabbing and arguing with my sisters on who would get them. For some reason I missed the film on the following Sunday afternoon. I got the impression at the time that they were thinking...

Re: Nelson Mandela's release (1990)

I remember watching it, I don't remember much about the scheduling but I do remember what seemed like hours of a camera shot pointing through a gate and down a long road in the shimmering sun, awaiting his arrival. I seem to remember some live footage of his car driving towards Cape Town and his spe...

Re: Brian Cant (1933-2017)

I was thinking the same thing, at the tender age of 3-4, the adults in my life were my parents, the local playgroup leaders and the likes of Brian Cant and Chloe Ashcroft. To me, there was no real distinction to a "real" adult and one on TV. They were all people teaching me and part of my early awar...

Re: 16mm vs. 35mm inserts

I used to enjoy watching the mammoth India series Mahabharat on C4 on Saturday lunchtimes in the 80's. They had massive use of eye-watering CSO effects, but this often meant that in the same scene with the same characters they would switch from film to VT and back again, or in some cases overlap the...

Interesting that they are held on Shibaden tapes... I wonder why they did that...

I remember a news item back in the 80's about an old woman who had videoed and archived the 9 o'clock news everyday since 1980. I wonder what happened to her collection, I am sure there were others who did the same.

Re: Odd misapprehensions

The Glen Campbell song "Rhinestone Cowboy" contains the line "There's been a load of compromisin' On the road to my horizon..." which I as an 8 year old in the late 70's interpreted that Mr Campbell had just taken delivery of a brand new Talbot Horizon car, as had my father at the time. I still can'...

Re: Judging by first impressions

I remember when "Father Ted" started on C4, they ran a number of trailers which focused on the zany/slapstick element of the show and I decided that it wasn't for me and missed the first series. It was only when friends started talking about it and I watched it and realized what a total gem it was !...

Re: The 1980s and classic theme tunes

I always loved the original 80's version of the "A Question of Sport" theme tune but hated it's replacement. Equally the "Antiques Roadshow" Brandenburg Concerto theme was wonderful and was replaced by some overly pretentious classical piece. In the 80's they did seem to like re-engineering perfectl...

Re: BBC 1 Regional Continuity Announcements

I am not sure if BBC Wales/Cymru still do this, but at least until the mid-90's then they would always throw up the BBC Wales globe at junctions. It always looked very amateurish and they would always manage to catch a few frames or even a few seconds of the national globe. I've got a few examples o...

Remastered Bond etc into HD

Having recently (finally) upgraded to HD and Bluray, I took the plunge to check out some of the Bond films which have been remastered onto Bluray. In this regards, the first Bond (Dr. No), the quality, colour and definition was amazing. It looked like it had just been filmed yesterday. And there-in ...

As a side, there is currently some optician's advert being shown here in Sweden (possibly Specsavers ?) which features John Cleese doing his Fawlty Towers routine of bashing his non-starting car with a tree branch. Due to lack of glasses he whacks a police car by mistake. Is this based on a UK TV ad...

Looking at the titles they want to "remake", I am wondering if their eyes are on the American market who seem to have an unnatural fondness for AYBS and Keeping Up Appearances etc.... Re: The Death of BBC Three

In the past, the real barrier to the uptake of on-demand was the availability of the delivery system (the need for a proper return path meant that you had to be cabled to get a proper VOD service). Now, even a pretty basic 2Mb broadband connection is good enough to run a video streaming service of ...
