Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

No comment on last night's episode? I thought it was better than some in the last couple of series, but not actually much good. And Clara is New Who's first real dud of a companion.

Re: Legendary documentaries

I've got the Johnny Go Home book, published by Quartet in 1976, and it is well worth a read. I remember the film being on, but not much about it - I don't think we saw it all. (Remember when watching one side meant you'd actually never see what was on the other?) I'd jump at a reshowing or DVD relea...

Re: Programes about television

On the more serious side of things, I remember the BBC four part doc "Auntie" in the 90s being very good, and also one I remember being trailed but never saw called Television, an ITV doc of the 80s. "Television" was a series, not sure how many episodes it had but there was a tie-in large hardback ...

Re: Kevin Ayers

Were the later Soft Machine never on OGWT? They became an instrumental jazz-influenced group who might have been a bit too austere and experimental for the show.

It's sad news about Kevin. I think he's the first of the original Softs to go.

Kevin Ayers certainly appeared on OGWT as a solo artist, but he left Soft Machine long before the show started.

Also, remember The Movie? I had issues 1 to about 40 and then the distribution broke down. Bought a complete bound run on Ebay a while back and found much to enjoy.

Re: Denis Gifford, Peter Haining, all that lot

Not a genre book, but The Sunday Times Guide to Movies on Television by Angela and Elkan Allan was always a favourite of mine. It made me want to see a lot of films, many of which I never caught until the internet/DVD era and some I haven't seen yet. (For instance, Catacombs: "Awful little British p...

I heard some of the Orwell Burma play on Monday and thought it was absolutely atrocious - a cut-and-paste arrangement of his quotes picturing him as a drip who never got over Jacintha Buddicom.

Re: Moon Landing Conspiracy and 1960's TV technology

Y2K could have caused real disruption. It didn't for two main reasons: computers developed very quickly in a few years, making a solution technically feasible; and there was the political will to recognise the problem and do something about it, probably because certain financial institutions realise...

The Network DVD includes all the US opening and closing title sequences as extras at the end of each episode. Several of them have to be seen to be believed.

It'd be nice to think that there's more chance of 'A Sharp Intake' being released, following the very recent discovery of the pilot-one of the series 'The Sounds of Laughter'.A friend's told me that one or two cast members might not be keen on the show being released.Anyone know for sure? I believe ...

Re: Scotland Yard

There's distorted sound on the episode "The Dark Stairway" - the dialogue's quite audible, but the music gets very crackly. Picture's a bit higher contrast than other episodes, too, but fine (and this is one of the series' most visually adventurous episodes).
