Re: "Adam Adamant" audio find

Lovely stuff it it were to be made available as a download. Otherwise what’s the point? To all intents and purposes it may as well still be missing. Doesn't that apply to almost any find except DW? The "new" Avengers episode for example. It's a bit surprising that so few recovered shows are ever sh...

Re: BBC Store to close

They wouldn't need to delete the files from your computer. I would presume that the app "phones home" to see if you have a valid account and if you don't, or the account has been closed, then the app would simply deny playback of the downloaded files. So unless anyone has proof to the contrary I'd b...

A passion that basically leads to slagging everything off that doesnt accord with their own image of what the show ought to be - one which usually shows the critic to be perpetually living in circa 1975.

May not be "fair" but it seems to be fair comment.

Yes but dont forget that for many obsessive Doctor Who fans, their favourite pastime is stabbing their supposed favourite show through the heart when it doesnt measure up to their exclusive view of what the show should be. It's akin to religious fanatics or socialists killing the impure...

Re: Power of the Daleks

I have to disagree with the criticisms of modern DW. Production techniques and the budget mean that truly spectacular things can be realised and I can't believe that the production crews of the past relished the technical challenges of their day and would have loved a proper budget and the ability t...

Re: The Black Adder: how should it have started?

Any reliance on history is chucked away within the first episode, and after that you can just enjoy the humour. I really liked the first series on its original tx especially the Witchsmeller episode. I found BA2 a bit of a shock when I watched the first episode but then it became my favourite. The "...

Re the budget, whilst Blackadder 2 only got made because it was substantially cheaper than the original, the subsequent series were very successful so I doubt they were under pressure to make it on a shoestring.

IIRC there was an article (maybe in the Radio Times) saying that Chef and also Last of the Summer Wine were being made or moving to all film to give greater flexibility with future HD formats - which seemed quite impressive in 1993.

David Stephens, that's a name from my youth :)

It wasn't David, but I recall another BBC Midlands announcer doing the link for a repeat of Destiny of The Daleks and pronouncing Dalek as Day-lek. Even at the age of 9 I remember thinking "how can he not know how to say Dalek!"

Strange about editing out fades to black as I have read that B&W Dr Who episodes had fades to black in them so when sold to countries with commercial TV they could fit in advert breaks. The fades to black in 1960s Doctor Who episodes would be down to the studio recording blocks and cut editing tech...

Cox is of course a completely legitimate academic. I severely doubt those sorts of programmes would be made without him. Sure it's very popular science but why not?

But that's surely not comparing like with like. £14.5m for 100 programmes sounds like chump change on a per episode basis. Sure it might be their largest overall commission but it's not going to be an "expensive" show.

Comparisons are all meaningless though(even if you adjust for inflation - or more accurately purchasing power) unless you know how a programme's costs were accounted for, and how accurate would any BBC numbers be prior to producer choice?. Otherwise you are just bandying numbers around that were pro...
