Re: The weird world of dubbing

Raj Singh is dubbed in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom by Katie Leigh. add to that his costume and it's no wonder that so many think the Little Maharaja is a princess.

Re: Shows ruined by revival/comeback

The proposed "Family Affair" in-character reunion in the eighties would have needed a Fake Buffy and a Fake Mr. French. Thankfully, Brian Keith nixed it. He also helped scuttle the proposed "Family Affair" film in the nineties that would have made fun of the show.

Best quote or moment from "The Goodies"?

Mine is from the episode with Patrick Troughton (He famously was uncomfy with the studio audience but still gives a fun performance): "Ratfink, I've misjudged you. You have as much right as anybody to win the Nice Person of the Year award. There's only one thing against you - the fact that you're a ...

Blackadder on a rewatch

I was watching the election night episode of Blackadder the Third and I noticed the joke that when the "Standing at the Back, Dressed Stupidly and Looking Stupid Party" guy is explaining their policies, he DOESN'T qualify that "free corsets for the under-fives" means little girls. Heh Heh Heh.

Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels

My feeling is that just because a minority group objects to something, that doesn't mean they should get their way. My generation was probably the last generation in Australia to have uncontroversial nativity plays in my kindergarten class.

They refuse to let the past be complicated. Anything good a person or show may have done is erased because of the bad things they did. People are not allowed to be capable of both good and evil.

Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels

Gollywogs were totally within the political mainstream at the time of "Bless This House". And talking about Blyton, one guy pointed to a 1966 Guardian article criticizing her... but the Guardian wasn't mainstream in 1966.

The BBC are afraid of some black civil rights activists claiming that even depicting a gollywog means that the BBC endorses racism.

Can't show Gollywogs anymore, even in repeats of old tv. They got rid of them in Enid Blyton in the eighties.

Re: Doctor Who Classic Series and DVDs

I see... This interesting defence of Saint Patrick Troughton is coming from the same DW fandom that still argues for The Talons of Weng-Chiang to be re-screened, even though as far back as the seventies, it was banned from TVOntario after they wisely showed it to a Chinese-Canadian civil rights group?

Mike Troughton talks about his sister blanking their father and Pat's attempts to reconcile. Although I can understand why Joanna never forgave him. Patrick Troughton did try to ruin Margaret, after all.

his son's book talks about Pat's daughter Joanna blanking Patrick and never speaking to him again. Re: Doctor Who Classic Series and DVDs

Patrick (and Fraser) undid Wendy Padbury's skirt and pushed Deborah Watling into ice-cold sea foam. He was a sexist creep who delighted in humiliating young women who were only a couple of years past their schooldays. His own daughter Joanna never spoke to him for the rest of his life after the horr...

Charles Manson was also way too old to be considered for a role in The Monkees even if he hadn't been in jail.

Tim Curry for the Doctor Who TVM.. although his claim to have suggested Paul McGann instead may be what we call "the talk show anecdote" version of events rather than reality.

Re: "Cousin Oliver syndrome"

My OP states that the creators of Hey Dad used a recasting to create a Cousin Oliver. The character of Jenny was a mid-teen but they turn her back into a pre-teen as they already have another teenage girl character in the cast.

"Cousin Oliver syndrome"

Does this happen much in British shows vs. American?

My favourite example is Australia's Hey Dad...! when they used an Other Darrin to create a Cousin Oliver - Jenny Kelly goes from 15 to 12 when she gets a new face, body, and voice. It's not often you make a character substantially *younger*.

Favourite tale from the days of regional ITV?

My favourite ITV regional franchise story is this: Thames/LWT were showing something like Super Cup football from Africa in the late-night/overnight slot, so one chap got some beers in and invited his mates round to watch the game. However, he lived in Royston in Hertfordshire, which is served by An...
