Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

And the vocal minority shouts out, but that doesn't make it the majority (speaking with people who support your opinions doesn't make a difference as they're probably of a similar mindset). Don't just explain why things don't agree with your opinion - point to articles, polls etc to support your opi...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

It was a poll (just checked again 80.44% to 19.56%) on Gallifrey Base (apparently it has 85,214 members), which I think is the largest, but I'm happy to be corrected. For those who haven't seen the Saturday Night Live parody, this is the whole sketch - it's regarded as a classic in it's own right (I...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

As William Shatner said on Saturday Night Live all those years ago "For God's sake get a life". I was surprised to see that on the largest of the DW websites that the vote is currently at 80% in favour of the change - Go Jodie!

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

You would have to remind me about any references in "The Doctor's Wife", I know it was the Gaiman one with the excellent Suranne Jones as The TARDIS, don't recall any mention of gender switching though. I'm sure others more familiar with the programme might know earlier references, but it got me th...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Well Ian is Ian - he can get irate at most things but although I enjoy his passion I can't say I'd ever use him as a touchstone on anything, whether that be Doctor Who or Northern Soul! I do think that most of us here would fall in to the 'tv addict' classification and tend to hear extreme and impas...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

I don't actually see the downside, as it appears that those who just don't seem prepared to even give the switch a chance are also 'classic' fans who also don't like the current series. If anything, misogyny aside, they're probably the ones who stand to get their old programme back more than the cas...

Re: Our "multicultural past"

I think it depends on who is making the programme. Two historical dramas I've recently binge-watched, Vikings and Black Sails, seem to have gone for this approach. They're both semi-historical with a mixture of real historical characters supplemented by either ones from folklore (Vikings) or fantasy...

I think he had his tongue slightly in his cheek when he said that but, rising to it, one is a fictional male spy, whilst the other is a shape changing alien renowned for regularly making huge changes to his / her physiology (way more extreme than a tweak in gender which we can effectively do in real...

Well I'm really looking forward to it and it's good to see that she's getting such positive reactions from the general public. I always thought that Capaldi would be my ideal Doctor to give us more of a classic feel (I appreciate that it's heavily dependent on the scripts), but although I've enjoyed...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Don't prod them Bernie - they're just waiting for positive replies so that they can pile in with page upon page of hatred for the new series (so I'm not sure why it matters to them which actor plays the Doctor!) - oops, I've given them something to react to!

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Well all in all I thought that the two part finale was pretty good and enjoyable. There were one or two quibbles - they just can't resist having an arc to something earlier in the season or just killing a companion. However, it was dark enough when it needed to be and just about got enough out of th...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

I think you're just wrong on your history here, but let's not let it spiral into Horrible Histories! However, just from a logical perspective, all of the northern African countries bordering the Mediterranean and down through Egypt were part of the Roman Empire, so definitely very dark skinned. Thes...

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

Would that be Missy - the best Master since Delgado, or the manic John Simm? It's been a really good season so far, and Bill is about the best companion they've ever had, but I'm getting a bit tired of the DW world (I never thought I'd ever say that) and just want serious adult drama nowadays.

Didn't he 'just' do novelisations of existing material (e.g. DW Target books) rather than any original material - probably doing him a dis-service but I can't remember him writing anything for tv or film.

Hi, Looking back at the Colin Baker era, can anyone think of any other actor or actress in any TV series that were ousted or sacked under the directive of the heads of the company? It's obviously going off topic but depending on how you describe 'head' (Michael Grade was Controller of BBC 1 not the...

One would assume that with a new showrunner and Doctor that it's going to get at least a year to reinvent itself before there is talk of a cancellation / hiatus.

Re: The All-Purpose Current Doctor Who (2005-) Thread

I thought that the new companion was a real step up from the last three or four - it had a feel of the launch episode 'Rose' - the story was instantly forgettable but the characters were set up well for the rest of the season.

It looks like with the new series it will be a trio including The Doctor. Do we really need that bald guy for comic relief?? Yes, I think we do. A major name with great comedy timing is what is required to break up the boring Doctor and eye-candy dynamic - it certainly worked with Catherine Tate an...
