Re: PR: Aldwych Farces: volume 2 [Network]

Have both of these but very glad to upgrade the picture quality. I was worried it'd be one of those slow one-a-year release schedules so glad to see them coming out in fairly quick succession. Those lovely Network people! 2015 is shaping up to be a good year for releases.

Sold! Not seen either of these but Jessie's sassy personality in her 30s films that I've seen is rather endearing so I'm more than happy to see more of her output.

Re: PR: Aldwych Farces: volume 1 [Network]

Askey is one of those performers that people either loved or hated though, he can grate at times. The Aldwych fares are great fun, not always hilarious granted, given their age, but like the Carry On's it's more about the performers than the material. Tom Walls is good as the sensible and usually mi...

Excellent, the ropey quality ones I have are surprisingly very funny, God knows why Jason has held these back, better than anything he' done since the 90s!

This could be an interesting series of releases, lots of rare old British comedy films that could finally see the light of day. Anything with Claude Hulbert in gets my money. Well done Network!

Over the moon about this, I've long hoped Network would do the Aldwych Farces. Turkey Time is one of those that I'm missing. Hope they won't be skipping the earlier rarities such as Rookery Nook and Thark?

Re: Arthur Askey meets Wonder Woman.

Ye, British film often assumes that to sell in America they have to Americanise things, whereas in reality American audiences watch 'foreign; films to see something different, they can watch US films for US perspective, hence why the US influenced Dad's Army film wasn't very successful but the very ...

Re: Arthur Askey meets Wonder Woman.

Bees In Paradise scriptwriter Marriott Edgar was in his 60s by then, and co-writer Val Guest was 31, neither strikes me as being a comic reader, or shows any such influence in other films including Will Hays' output. Just can't see it myself although perfectly possible I suppose. Once we assume a co...

Re: Arthur Askey meets Wonder Woman.

I understand about the mythological archetype, but it's points such as the military aircraft crash-landing on Paradise Island,in both stories which seem to be unique. Again likely coincidence purely because there was a war on so most films at that time had a military/war theme an in those days the o...

Re: Arthur Askey meets Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman made her appearance only two years earlier in 1942 and at that early stage wasn't probably well know, if at all, in Britain. I wouldn't say the Askey film was based on that comic character, it just takes inspiration from the same source material. The Amazons are a part of Greek mytholog...

Re: PR: Jimmy Clitheroe: That's My Boy [Network]

Well he was 40 in 1961, 21 when playing alongside George Formby in 1942's Much Too Shy and playing a kid then. There's no way he's going to look anything like a 12 year old boy by this stage.

Re: PR: Jimmy Clitheroe: That's My Boy [Network]

I'm not sure that by this age he did look like a kid, just a very short clearly aged adult. He might have got away with it when starring alongside Frank Randle in the 40s but by the 60s I think the reason the TV series was so short lived was because it didn't work visually.

Red Dwarf USA - A pilot was shot but never broadcast, the execs weren't happy with it and gave Grant & Naylor the opportunity to put together a promo which also didn't go anywhere. This was around 1992 as I recall.

Inconceivable that anything like that could happen on ITV - rival advertisers wouldn't have allowed it. Re: The Colonel's queer complaints

Is it three consecutive episodes, or has it been edited into something else? The 1955 film is an edit of episodes 19 (Hot Money), 24 (Death in the Dressing Room) and 25 (The New Invisible Man) to help advertise the series which was recorded in 1952 and 1953 but not broadcast until 1955 in the US an...
