Just announced on Radio 4 PM news that he has passed away aged 83.

Although I'm too young to remember Top of the Form, thanks to the early series of Winner Takes All the expression "difference of opinion" has always reminded me of him.

He co-presented Television Top of the Form, but I don't think he was involved with Top of the Form (the original radio series, which outlived the TV version).

He devised Winner Takes All of course, and did the "straight" part of the quiz while Jimmy Tarbuck indulged in banter with the contestants. You never actually saw him until he came out to present the prizes at the end of the series, although he later went on to present the show himself. I suppose in some ways it's like Armstrong and Osman on Pointless - you knew who was the real brains behind the programme.

Also an accomplished presenter of radio programmes like The Palace of Laughter.

A lovely reassuring voice of gravitas with just a hint of mischief and humour.
