Julian Wilson (1940-2014)

Post by RobinCarmody »

Quite an important figure in the culture wars (to a considerable extent, and obviously entirely so in this case, internecine ones within the Right) which characterised the period I grew up in: an exact contemporary of John McCririck at Harrow, he was the Old Tory opponent of McCririck's pseudo-prole Thatcherism (with the current Channel 4 Racing presenter and fellow Old Harrovian, Nick Luck, eventually being the Cameronite).

Putting The Alternative Voice to one side (although I believe it continues on page 202) it's a great shame to read that Julian Wilson has died. A great enthusiast for racing and a truly authoritative voice. RIP

Talking of authoritative voices, I was surprised and gratified to note that Sir Peter O'Sullevan is still very much with us at 96.

Sir Peter was still driving (himself) to Longchamp for the Prix De L'arc de Triomphe until very recently. I believe he had a stroke around a year ago and I haven't heard about his health since.
