Geraldine McEwan (1932-2015)
Re: Geraldine McEwan (1932-2015)
That's a shame. I finally got around to rewatching "Mulberry" late last year - the first time I've seen it since it originally aired on the BBC. Such a nice little series, and she was wonderful in it as the spiky Miss Farnaby.

Expect trouble if you know more than they do.
Re: Geraldine McEwan (1932-2015)
The Guardian obituary neglects to mention her performance as Mrs Proudie in The Barchester Chronicles. That and Oranges... are what I always remember her for.

Another sad loss.
As with Mickey, it was "Mulberry", that first sprang to mind, and "Mapp And Lucia", of course.
So many others, though.

Re: Geraldine McEwan (1932-2015)
I saw her play Gertrude to Alan Rickman's Hamlet about 20 years ago...I'd never seen the play before (but had read bits of it...) so was surprised when, between the pair of them, they made it very very funny...
Like everyone else, I remember her for Mrs Proudie and Lucia, but I became a fan of hers at 14, watching her as Jean Brodie in the 1978 series...apparently, Muriel Sparks' favourite portrayal...wonderful stuff...
Very interested to read about her apparent refusal of OBE and DBE...not confirmed by the lady herself, but reported in the obituaries...
