Gareth Thomas

Forever linked to Blake's 7 as the titular hero, but a great career also on stage and in plays such as Play for Today 'Stockers Copper'. Sad news.

This is becoming a really shitty year for for the loss of some really great media figures!

RIP Gareth. Ithought it odd that in all the early news pieces Gareth's birthplace was listed as Wales. This seemed very general. Having read 3 obituaries now it seems there is no consensus. Most don't elaborate but one says Aberystwyth whilst another says London. Can any members clarify? Just curious.
Thanks
Don

Don --

It's all Hitler's fault.

GT's family lived in Aberystwych but his father was in the army during the war. His dad happened to get leave in the capital when his mother was pregnant with GT and close to term. She went to London to visit her husband and happened to go into labour, so GT had London as his registered place of birth.

His mum took him back to Aberystwyth once she was out of hospital and they continued to live there for years. GT spoke (only?) Welsh until he was about six years old.

He was thus Welsh in every sense except for the fact he wasn't born in Wales.

Very sad news.

He was excellent in "Blakes 7" of course, even if Paul Darrow had the more interesting character.

Must mention "Heartbeat", and even "Star Maidens.

Great Actor.

It feels too early and depressing for all my childhood characters to die.

I would be curious to see Morgan's Boy, the play that he is said to be the most proud of.
