Best known as Grouty in Porridge, of course, but distinguished in many other roles.

Peter Vaughan often played tough men as in Porridge or as in The Protectors episode 'Quin', but he was a nice guy as can be heard in
an interview by the BBC from last year. A clip was played again yesterday 3pm News, Radio 2 (at 1h02m20s)

He says "One of the most amazing extraordinary things about my career is that only when I have wanted to rest have I rested. I’ve never been out of work in 77 years; so something’s happened somewhere, I don’t know – I was just plain lucky”

He's another very good actor who gave a lot to TV and who will be remembered. RIP
"Now listen you guys, I don't wish to alarm you but there's some pretty weird things going on out here..."

Such a superb versatile actor, he could be chilling in a dramatic role, and then hilarious in a comedy one.

Apart from the many wonderful dramas, "Porridge" obviously (funny and chilling in that one) but also my favourite John Sullivan Comedy, "Citizen Smith" as Shirley's Dad.

A huge loss.

It's been remarked upon many times before, but I think it's significant that his best-known TV role was one that he only played in three episodes (plus the 1979 film).

Personally, I will always remember him best as Felix Hutchinson in "Our Friends in the North", a fantastic performance in possibly the greatest television drama ever made.

Let's not forget "A Warning to the Curious". A fine piece.
