Derek Fowlds (1937-2020)

The last of the main trio in Yes (Prime) Minister to leave us. As Bernard Woolley he often had the funniest lines of the three - though you usually had to wait ages until he had a chance to interject!

And as "Mr Derek" he was the first (and best) of Basil Brush's companions that I remember.

Basil's first two companions (David Nixon & Rodney Bewes) were already big stars when they took on the job while Derek was relatively unknown so had a tough job to do filling their shoes but did it brilliantly and yes, for my money he was the best of Basil's companions.

Bernard Wooley was a dream part for an actor. He didn't have to learn the convoluted speeches of Nigel Hawthorne and Paul Eddington and was given loads of funny lines which he delivered to perfection. He was also great as Bill Maynard's Nemesis in "Heartbeat"

He had a great quality of being able to project gravitas but with a constant twinkle in his eye. R.I.P. Derek

He had that 'boyish' quality about him, and still the best of Basil's friends.

Just months after his "Heartbeat" mate (William Simons) left us as well.

The Funeral was on Monday (17-2-20) and Basil turned up and read a poem!

What a lovely and moving poem, good ol' Basil.

They were superb together.

There was a tribute slide at the end of "Gideon's Way" on TPTV , Tuesday night, in which he gave an excellent performance.
