The specs for avatars is 160 x 160 pixels (fine) but no way can I optimise any image down to 19kB as requested on my control panel? Is this a fault because I can see others putting up larger avatars of far more complex and detailed resolution...

What are you using to "optimise"? Mine is 8.15kB, achieved by nothing more than reducing it to that size.

I've increased it to 50kb. Is that enough?

I'm using Photoshop to make a JPG and I've taken a 113x160 72dpi image down to zero quality, and it's still 104kB...

In that case I've set it to 105kb.

Thanks! That seems to have done the trick. How have other people optimised theirs then?

Mine's just standard Photoshop save-for-web settings.

Mine's a .gif, and I used Fireworks to resize the original b/w image and output it in .gif format. It seemed to do a better job of handling the image edges against the transparent background than did Photoshop.

I'm slightly puzzled, though. If I save your avatar image to my hard drive, it's only 41.5KB in size. What's more, the pretty similar image on culttimes.co.uk is both larger (212px x 300px) and smaller (only 35KB).

Paint Shop Pro 4 here. I've been using the same version since I think 1998.

I use IrfanView.
Its a free small photo editing prog and is reasonably versatile for things like resizing avatars.

Just had a thought... is your original image CMYK? If so, did you convert it to RGB within Photoshop before saving to JPG?

Yes it was RGB. But I was saving as a standard JPG and using the optimisation controls there, and not Save For Web after all... I think I've been out of web design for too long.

I use the The GNU Image Manipulation Program (Gimp).

I can never get sizes in Paint, just the % of the original pic. I always use Piknic/Picasa.

You can change them to the left by editing the style HTML and CSS files within the phpBB themes folders.
