"Coming Up Next" - continuity announcers programme

Post by Paul Hayes »

Before the demise of the old forum, there was a thread I'd posted with a bit of fact-checking for a radio programme I was editing, called Coming Up Next, featuring various former in-vision continuity announcers reminiscing about their days linking the programmes together. Several of you were kind enough to help me out with informative and interesting replies.

This is going out at 6pm on New Year's Eve on BBC Radio Norfolk, but there's now a preview clip up featuring Helen McDermott, Katie Glass and David Clayton recalling Anglia Television's (in)famous birthday puppet, "BC".

The clip's online here, if you're interested: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p012zhdb

Yes, plugged in all places!

No podcast, but the full show will remain online for a week after transmission, and the stand-alone clip about BC will remain online indefinitely.

What I heard of it, it was good, but my internet connection kept dropping off, and I was also using my 'smart' (sic) tv, through which the sound was a bit wooly, but as I say, what I heard was good, and was nice to hear Helen again, and Mr Clayton :-)

Got a bit of a soft spot for Helen ! :-)

edit. FB... meant I also put it my timleline on FB too :-) just worded it badly

Sounded an excellent programme Paul. Only heard bits of it, but have downloaded it and will listen to it tonight on the ferry over to Zebrugge, or on the drive down to Frankfurt tomorrow. Was great to hear Tom Edwards, Katie Glass and of course dear Helen - one of the male faces of Thames and of course the two female faces of Anglia.

Thanks Simon - long time no speak!

Enjoyed it very much, but did anyone else feel that Tom Edwards came over just a wee bit self-important? Katie and Helen sounded like they were having a nostalgic natter, but Tom seemed to want to ensure we were left in no doubt that he'd done big gigs like Thames and national BBC radio.

Sorry to resurrect this as a sort of zombie thread, but a few weeks ago I put a load of my radio documentaries up on Dropbox for anyone who wanted some extra lockdown listening, including this one. It's here if anyone fancies it:

Nothing substantial, but hopefully a nice light ramble through the days of in-vision continuity.

Mark Lipscomb must be a significant figure as did the final Thames startup on 31/12/92, continuity across the network on the night of 9/11, the final junction for Carlton London on 25/10/02...
