Callan: This Man Alone (Network)

Post by bent_halo »

High time that there was a thread about this very welcome new set comprising the feature-length documentary about the series, This Man Alone, plus remastered versions of "A Magnum for Schneider", "The Good Ones Are All Dead", the complete studio tape for "The Worst Soldier I Ever Saw" and the original trailer for "Let's Kill Everybody". For the masochists there's also a copy of the surviving Edward Woodward Hour.

What I think has been undersold in publicity for the set is the remarkable PDF archive. I loaded up disc 3 of the set last night and was delighted to discover a wealth of material. A comprehensive set of television scripts (often more than one version) and sales material. If these were published in book forms you would willingly pay twice the asking price.

Here's a list of the PDFs. I only list them here because I think people should know what they're missing!

Is this version of "A Magnum for Schneider" from VTR? ISTR it survives on tape but the previous release was the cranky old TR lifted from Frank Muir's "TV Heaven" showing.

There's a note on the sleeve about that, but it's not to hand sadly. I think it's more complicated than that - was it shot on tape but edited on film? We get a slightly longer version which I watched the other night and looked good.

Schneider was actually recorded direct to film by the look of things. The subsequent film edit was then transferred to VT and had the ABC ident and ad-breaks added for initial transmission. The TV Heaven (and Monochrome Years DVD) had the version sourced from tape - the new one on the This Man Alone set is a new transfer from the initial T/R.

It's certainly worth it for the PDFs alone.

That and the mute rushes of James Mitchell wandering about in the rain.
