"Pipkins" Vol 5

Post by Mark »

A fifth Vol of "Pipkins" is down on Amazon, for August, followed by a box set.

Suggesting 5 is the last one then.

The 4 vols contain 60 episodes ( including three incomplete ones) I make it 92 surviving out of 325, with all of the last series as the only complete one.

None of the episode guides seem to be correct, so I had a go at one myself, it's an amalgam of the various ones, which I think is accurate.

Cheers for that Mark. That's a very handy guide. I do hope that the next volume does include any remaining episodes from the early years.

Yes, it's a shame so many of the early ones are missing, especially loved the original set.

Vol 5 should feature the very last one, which does mention it's the end, and the new show taking over...sad.!

BIt of trivia, but I think I spotted the Pipkins Van in an earlier incarnation, during an episode of "Spyder's Web", "Emergency Exit.

I remember watching that last show and feeling disappointed that Pipkins was over, although I was 14 at the time and far too old to be still watching! Lets Pretend was just an awful replacement. I can't imagine anyone feeling nostalgic about it, an empty set with various young unmemorable actors goofing about with cheap props, it completely lacked the charm of it's predecessor.

"Pipkins" was vastly superior, that's for sure, in fact I would easily place it first amongst the other lunchtime shows.

One of the "Let's Pretend" presenters was Jane Cox, better known as Lisa Dingle in "Emmerdale".

Another was the late Martin Smith, who went on to be Mickey Doyle in 'Crossroads' in 1986.

Vol 5 has been passed by the BBFC, another 22 episodes.

So it looks like the majority of them will be from the final series, including the very last one ( sniff) it's mentioned in the episode.

That will be 82 episodes altogether, not bad, thanks to the sterling efforts of several of the series stalwarts, who had the good sense to tape them in the first place.!

That's terrific news Mark, although I wish there were more early episodes extant - Wayne Laryea's era as Johnny was by far the best in Pipkins' run, he was really terrific in the role.

By the way, I'm not always of the opinion that all the original lunchtime kids shows were better. I think Yorkshire's "Get Up And Go/Mooncat and Co" was much much better than what it replaced - "Stepping Stones" which was deathly dull, much like "Lets Pretend" in it's style.

Enjoyed reading this thread, amazed that a lunchtime show for such young viewers has such a dedicated following, not knocking it, i was brought up in the '50s enjoying "watch with mother", might watch an intro or two on youtube but can't see myself buying box sets of them or trying to hunt down missing segments of "bill and ben", live and let live but can someone explain the appeal of Pipkins? btw no offence intended.

The appeal? It had great puppet characters - it was was funny and charming with great songs. Johnny (Wayne Laryea) and Tom (Jonathan Kydd) were terrific as well. I can guarantee that if you picked any bunch of kids in the 70's and ask them what their favourite lunchtime show was it was usually Pipkins, certainly not Rainbow, Hickory House or Mr Trimble/Stepping Stones. Rainbow now appears to be more fondly remembered as it had longevity - it ran for another decade after Pipkins, plus, in my humble opinion, the 80's episodes of Rainbow were more entertaining than the 70's episodes.

Yes, it was slightly different from the others, as it focused on social life as it's core premise.

A series of mini-dramas, in a way with ( as Matty said) amusing dialogue and charming songs.

After the death of it's star George Woodbridge, it was dealt with head on and it was actually mentioned in the show that the character he played had died.

It was very well written and hugely creative, and of course it has an importance in broadcasting history ( along with the others) as one of the first examples of the ITV lunchtime slot, which resulted in many fine and memorable shows in the genre.

There were some great shows, in later decades, certainly, such as "The Riddlers" and "Wizzadora" ( which had recognisable elements from earlier series) but I would have to disagree with you, Matty, with regards to "Stepping Stones", for one very good reason...Elisabeth Sladen, I'm still holding out for a box set of all her episodes!...in fact there is a short clip on YT, in which she appears in her "Brain Of Morbius" outfit from "Who".

That's a very handy list of all the available episodes.

I was a bit puzzled by the last entry though, there are no episodes on twice, I only have the separate volumes, but the very last episode, "Odd Man Out", S8E18, 29/12/81, will be on disc 10, but its "The Odd One Out", S6E4, 6/12/79, that' must be on disc 2.
