PR: The Cedar Tree: The Complete Series 1 Volume 1 [Network]

Created by Upstairs Downstairs' Alfred Shaugnessy, The Cedar Tree is a study of one fictional aristocratic family, the Bournes of Larkfield Manor, focusing particularly on daughters Elizabeth (21), Anne (18), and Victoria (16). Dependent on their parents for income and bound by the remnants of the previous century’s code of social behaviour, they represent a small backwater of Thirties’ life. The girls’ great hope is to find a suitable husband, and their expectations are high; but who is to know that what awaits all women at the end of the ‘Devil’s Decade’ is war?

A huge success for ITV in the 1970s, The Cedar Tree picked up the reigns for classy period drama from Upstairs Downstairs and is the precursor to today's highly popular costume dramas such as Cranford.

At last! I wondered if this series would ever get a release. Looks like the first 32 episodes. Thanks Network.

HUZZAH! Put me down for this baby. Very happy three year-old cosy memories attached to this series.

What would make it perfect would be if Network reinstated the lovely VT clocks I was so fond of on their releases. Anyone know why they stopped? Ahh, go on Network!

Am I correct in thinking that this was an afternoon thing?

Yes it was. My Mum's favourite. I'll buy it for her.

Always thought it seemed like a bit of a comedown for Shaughnessy to go from UpDown to an afternoon serial...

I remember it being very good, and set in Herefordshire, which is a stones throw from me. I'm sure I had a thing for one of the daughters at the time.

Ooh, yes, like the thing is, now all TV even the daytime stuff is really glossy, look at Father Brown. Back then, there was a charm. It didn't try to be filmic. More stage-like.

I always thought that the second to last adventure of SAPPHIRE & STEEL used the same set as THE CEDAR TREE. I will now find out!
