Talk of "The Likely Lads", Rodney Bewes as Bob used to mention a girl he and Terry knew at school, and I think he also mentions her in "Dear Mother...Love Albert", and never seen.

Annoyingly, I can't for the life of me, recall her name, but it turned out that she was in fact a real School friend of Bewes, as she turned up as a guest on his "This Is Your Life".

I'll have to go through the episodes to find out.

Deidre Birchwood? That was a name that cropped up a lot in The Likely Lads.

Yes!...that was it, nice one.

So, unseen fictionally, but we got to see the real one on "TIYL".

I had a meeting in Portland House today which reminded me - the Chairman of the Greatrick Organisation was constantly referred to in 'The Organisation' but never got nearer to actually appearing than the other end of a phone line.

Andrée the bedridden wife in Secret Army is mostly just a noise upstairs. She appears in the first episode, but then isn't seen for a long time.

She's in at least five of the sixteen episodes of the first series - so hardly unseen, even if there's a gap between appearances.

Yes there is a gap. For eleven subsequent episodes she's just an occasional knock heard to come from upstairs. Sometimes not even that.

In the early Coronation Street episodes, Gamma Garments was owned by Mr Papagopolous, who was never seen.

Mr Swindley (Arthur Lowe) and Miss Nugent (Eileen Derbyshire) were always referring to him.

Listening to one of the radio remakes of Steptoe and Son, I heard a reference to "Dolly Clackett". Didn't this unseen character turn up in Hancock's Half Hour previously?

Oh yes, once or twice, including "The Two Murderers".

So that's two programmes she didn't appear in!

Broad Maud - One Foot In The Grave
Bob Sacamano - Seinfeld
Robin Masters - Magnum P.I.
Diane - Twin Peaks
The Terrible Zodin - Doctor Who :-)

...and finally, not technically a recurring character because she features in a one-off play, but significant because she's the titular character...

Abigail - Abigail's Party
You see, no-one... NO-ONE escapes the new world!!

I thought someone had already mentioned Mrs. Axelby, Mrs. Slocombe's friend from AYBS?, but apparently not.

"Who played Abigail in Abigail's Party?" actually came up as a question in Radio 4's Brain of Britain the other week, which I thought was rather unfair. It was answered correctly with "Nobody" but only after it had been passed over for a bonus after the inevitable incorrect answer of "Alison Steadman". The questionmaster, Russell Davies, then admitted "We don't normally do trick questions".
