Ace of Wands - 'Eye of Ra' audios

Post by Controller 2957 »

Hello folks,

Can anyone please tell me which episodes of 'Eye of Ra' exist as audio recordings? I've been able to establish that three of the four episodes exist on audio, but not WHICH three episodes.

Any steer on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

It's supposedly Episodes 2-4, but I haven't got a clue where I originally got that info from. It'll either be here, the old board, Roobarbs or the Missing Episodes forum.

I've only ever got my hands on the first two episodes of Nightmare Gas and they're pretty terrible quality.

Thanks, Kieran!

I believe there's audio material available for 'Seven Serpents, Sulphur and Salt', 'Nightmare Gas' and 'Eye of Ra' but of those, only 'Seven Serpents....' has existing scripts. I've heard bits of all of them and it's frustrating beyond belief that the only material that survives of 'Nightmare Gas' and 'Eye of Ra' is virtually unlistenable audio! 'Eye of Ra' is the only story I remember watching from series one and two. Oscar Quitak's Ceribraun must've struck a note with me as I recall the character quite clearly.

This series really needs the Big Finish treatment!

Yes, it is 2-4, also "Seven Serpents" and "Nightmare Gas".

All three episodes of "Nightmare Gas" are on YT, the quality is not bad, although ep 1 is at a slightly higher speed.

I have MP3 copies of the three "The Eye of Ra" audios, and can confirm they are episodes 2 to 4.

Thanks, Stephen. I've managed to obtain them. They make for pretty grim listening! I'll try putting them through some software to see if I can make them a little more listenable. We've been rather spoilt by the efforts of the likes of David Holman and Graham Strong and don't realise just how bad off-air audio can be. The only line I can remember for 'The Eye of Ra' is Cerebraun's, 'The next model will be better!' which, if memory serves, he delivers just before being turned into a toad towards the end of the final installment. I can just about make that out... To add to the misery, there don't appear to be any stills from that story, either...

So no episodes, no scripts, no stills and only a partial soundtrack that is virtually indecipherable. It's as near to obliterated as makes no odds. Doctor Who fans don't know how lucky they actually are...

It is very frustrating, but then there are others worse off than "AOW", take "Sexton Blake" for instance, only one episode out of fifty still around, there are photos from some of the episodes, and around nine scripts surviving, no audio that I know of.

The only other "AOW" story that doesn't seem to have any photos is "The Beautiful People", but there still might be some for these two stories, as there are a number of photos around which were not in the main ITV archive sets.

Audio-only survival seems in general almost random at time. No doubt nearly everything was recorded, but the bottleneck must be if people kept it and came forward. I've said it before but it's amazing that only one of the 1960s Sherlock Holmes episodes exists as audio, what with it being such a popular thing, with fanclubs in many countries and all.

A couple of programs even exist without their audio, probably because that was "sepmag" and they got separated.
In fact I suspect one of Ed Doolan's audio recordings may be used to give back sound to an Harry Worth episode.

Also worth adding to this invaluable list is an entire series' worth of mute filmed inserts for G.S.5 (ATV 1964). The whole lot are included as an extra on the Network Ghost Squad DVD and a strange watch it is, too. Sometimes you feel like you're getting to the essence of a story, and sometimes it's just bewildering...

Yeah, and apart from that one scene in Spartacus, stuff almost never gets redubbed.

The only archive British TV material to get redubbed that I can think of was Peter Cook and Dudley Moore redoing the soundtrack of the surviving filmed insets from the 1970 series of Not Only... But Also.

Wasn't that simply off-air audio? There happen to be many recordings from that series. Comedy is for some reason well represented, with e.g. all of the missing 1948 Show and Frost Reports existing as off air audio.

Oh yes, totally agree there. Or even a line of new original novels based on the series.

In that list, "Crime Buster", I was going to mention that series a while ago, as a potential DVD release, perhaps Network could have looked into it and found it complete ( as with other ATV series).

Those "AOW" audios ( they are all on YT now) the original copies may well be better quality, and you would think the whole series must have been done, why miss out "Joker" and one episode of "Ra".

I think Mark is right about the originals of those "The Eye of Ra" audios possibly being better quality. I've just had a quick listen to one of the ones that's now appeared on You Tube and it definitely sounds more muffled than the one I've got - maybe a couple of generations further down ...?

Possibly the cassettes had done the rounds as well?

I was doing audio cassette recording off TV shortly after that, and they were ( and still are) miles better and clearer than those, so they must be way down the line.

It's also possible it's based on the same recording, but with the volume amplified to normal levels. Either the tape was recorded very softly or the tape was in turn digitized with the wrong settings.

I did, but not at first, it was the ol' mic in front of the TV speaker to start with, experimenting, and getting either a buzz or whistle because the mic was too close to the speaker.

I used BASF C-90's, which were very good, also Scotch, which were variable with some producing WOW, and there was a cheap and cheerful one called Soundhog, which were actually quite good, later on I settled with TDK.
