Gunsmoke/Gun Law

Post by Ian Fryer »

Watching Endeavour last night my (well developed) pedantic side was struck by a minor error, when Fred Thursday arrived home and asked his wife if she was watching Gunsmoke.

Now Gunsmoke was, as far I as I know, known in the UK as Gun Law throughout its original 1960s run, a minor point in itself, but it did set me wondering why this might have been. Was there a product which it might have been regarding as advertising, as in Top Cat/Boss Cat?

There was a series called Gunsmoke on the Light Programme that started in September 1959 and ran until 17 February 1960.

Associated-Rediffusion broadcast Gun Law from 1 January 1960 to 7 September 1961 and Gunsmoke from 16 October 1961. I'm guessing it was a name change to avoid confusion with the pre-existing BBC radio series.

However, A-R and ATV (Midlands) were showing the programme under the title Gun Law back in 1955-6.

The A-R screenings began somewhat earlier. The earliest episode listing I have is for the story Night Incident on January 11th 1956. It's still an interesting possibility that there was a now-forgotten Gunsmoke producion of some kind.

EDIT: Sorry Jez, our postings crossed over.

What an interesting question! I wondered if perhaps the change was to avoid confusion with the unrelated movie of the same name, but I see there was also a film called Gun Law so it can't be that.

Whilst searching the internet I've also turned up the unexpected fact that prolific gag writer Dick Vosburgh doubled for James Arness for the remade UK title sequence (The Happiest Trails p28). According to IMDB Gun Law was also the title used in the Spanish speaking countries, and the cartoon strip, published in the UK in the Daily Express.

I have to say, I don't remember the name Gun Law at all. In defence of Fred Thursday was it, like Boss Cat, a name that nobody actually used?

Interestingly, I just checked on Genome and the Light Programme Gunsmoke series was the original radio series that the TV version was based on. This starred William Conrad as Marshall Dillon and was rather more tough and hard-bitten than the TV version.

BBC One picked up the TV series for a run of eleven episodes in the summer of 1972, showing a mixture of series 15, 16 and 17 stories. The series (as pointed out earlier in the thread) reverted to its original title of Gunsmoke during 1961 and remained so until it disappeared from the ITV regions - Scottish and Ulster being the last - in February 1972.

It then disappeared from the BBC for 21 years, when BBC Two showed episodes from 1966's series 12.

My original point about the Gunsmoke title being incorrectly used in Endeavour was wrong, though the series disappeared from ITV between September 1967 to April 1970. It mIght be regarded as asking a lot of the episodre's writer to have either know or cared about this!

That detail about the title sequence is fascinating - I was wondering how the titles were changed.

Did some study into the UK screenings of the series in the 1950s a couple of years back ...

A-R debut the show on Wednesday 7 December 1955, and the first one in advance listings was referred to as "Gunsmoke" after which it became "Gun Law". As far as I can tell, the first one screened was "Matt Gets It" (i.e. the first screened in the US) and was introduced by John Wayne.

The show quickly gained afternoon repeats: "Matt Gets It" aired again on A-R at 4.30pm on Friday 13 January 1956. These afternoon repeats didn't last very long - only a few weeks.

ATV Midlands takes the show from Monday 20 February 1956, Granada from Wednesday 9 May 1956, Scottish from Tuesday 3 September 1957.

A-R seem to take all of the first run of 39, but then there's about three of the second run that seem to be omitted first time around: "Cow Doctor", "Brush at Elkader" and "The Round Up" ... all of which appear on ATV Midlands and Granada. I think that A-R took "Robin Hood" ... but as yet I have no sign of this airing on any other ITV station in the 1950s.

All the third season airs (intermingled with the start of the fourth run), and then there's a few from the fourth run ("Robber Bridegroom" and "The Constable") which don't air before the fifth series debuts at the end of 1959. I really need to do a bit more checking into it - the transmission patterns of film series in the 1950s are quite fascinating ...

In the Hancock's Half Hour episode, The Economy Drive, Hancock refers to Gun Law.

When Sid leaves the TV on when they go on holidays, they return home to find nearly everything in the house left on and smoke apparently coming from the TV it's that hot and Tony says: "That smoke's not coming from Gun Law".

In Australia first run episodes of Gunsmoke were called Gunsmoke and repeats often went out under the title - Marshall Dillon.

Managed to dig my notes out from my database in case anyone's interested. Not 100% checked and with gaps. [?] indicates I've guessed which episode aired, and I've noted where the title given in UK listings differs from the accepted US titles. I've also appended the series/episode number from the US sequence with the network tx date.

I love that level of detail in Galton and Simpson's scripts.

It makes sense that Australia eventually got prints titled Marshall Dillon, as that was the syndication title of Gunsmoke. Back then if a series was sold into syndication in the USA while new episodes were still being produced it was common for the title to be changed so viewers knew which were the new stories and which the repeats.

Thank you, that's genuinely fascinating. I've been going through a lot of 1950s TV Times recently and one especially useful feature from the magazine's early days is it giving the date of the original broadcast when an episode is repeated.

Quite simply, it wasn't, you're memory is playing tricks.

If not earlier, the title Gunsmoke was certainly used here from late 1961 e.g. "Old Yellow Boots", billed in TV Times under the title Gunsmoke on 23.10.1961.

Episodes first shown in the US in 1963 (e.g. "The Odyssey of Jubal Tanner") were shown here in 1963 (ATV midlands) or 1964 (ATV London), under the title Gunsmoke. Similarly, "Help Me, Kitty" from 1964 was shown here in 1967 under the title Gunsmoke, on ATV London.

I'm only quoting specific titles to illustrate that these seem to have been first-run episodes rather than episodes previously shown as Gun Law.

Thanks Simon. The Gun Law title seems to have been in use in the UK from 1955 to some point in 1961, at which point it became Gunsmoke for the rest of its ITV run.

Now I've had a closer look, I think the switch coincided with a change of format: the half-hour episodes were all called Gun Law here, but the hour-long episodes were billed as Gunsmoke.

That still doesn't explain why they made the change in the first place, when the series first came here. The BBC certainly played radio episodes of Gunsmoke in 1959, as stearn says (above), but ITV had been running the television series since 1955, and I can't see any episodes on BBC radio that early. So that wouldn't appear to be a reason for the change.

There was a UK board game of it in 1959 called "Gun Law", and various Annuals and books .

The first two books, with the title "Gun Law" from 58 and 59 and then "Gunsmoke" from 62 onwards (the 62 book, a comic album, says 'Based on the popular BBC Television Series' on the cover).
