Yes they did seem to be busy elsewhere, Arthur Lowe on several episodes of "Doctor At Large" for instance, and there was also the "DA" film of course.

There was an interesting item on the letters page in a 1970 TV Times edition.

There had been many letters from viewers asking why the same 'fat man' could be seen in the audience of "Max" ( Bygraves) two weeks running.

It turned out it was "Avengers" Actor, Patrick Newell, a fan of Max, who lived close to Teddington Studios, and knew the producer, asking if he could watch a recording'

Due to 'Other commitments', two editions of "Max" had to recorded on the same night.
