Top of the Pops "recording over old film" article in the Daily Mail

Post by Razor Eddie »

The BBC used to have a policy of recording over old film to save money which resulted in most of the 1976 episodes of the show being wiped.

Very glad this was not possible as we'd have lost a lot more than we have otherwise!

The battle over the distinction between film and video recording was lost long ago. Mind you, there's also this other howler in the story: "a fan of the show in Wales recorded the show every week using one of the first video cassette recorders, a Sony CV-2000 tape recorder." D'oh!

Well the BBC have said that Eastenders was restarting "Filming" so they don't seem to mind. Of course they used the term "Telerecording" for both film and VT.
