Possibility of Coronation repeat?
Possibility of Coronation repeat?
I remember reading one of the posters here is in contact with someone who is usually responsible for BBC Parliament election repeats. With just a month to go, might this be the appropriate time to suggest a repeat of the 1953 Coronation repeat? I just sent a comment about this to the BBC as well, but a personal approach may be better...

The trouble is we know the plot so well...
Queen sits in buggy, bounces along the road and waves a bit
Queen strolls up church has a sit down and somebody plonks a tasty bit of headgear on her head, they have a couple of songs, wail a bit and everyone goes home.
The End

At least they don't do it year after year, like Wimbledon or the bloody FA Cup!fatcat wrote:The trouble is we know the plot so well...

It may not sell as many TV sets as the original showing.

Apparently the BBC have had the Coronation Telerecording cleaned up & digitised, I assume for using the footage in celebration programmes, but don't know about a repeat of the whole 7 hour broadcast!

Re: Possibility of Coronation repeat?
As the thread starter pointed out, they did repeat the whole thing, all 7 hours, on BBC Parliament in 2003. One of their first 'as live' repeats, I think. It would be entirely appropriate to show it again for the 60th anniversary.

The idea that the Coronation had such an effect in the first place is something of a myth. If you graph the number of TV licences on issue between 1947 and 1960, there is no spike for 1954, which we would expect if there had been a unusual increase in TV set aquisition outside of the existing trend, which is actually remarkably steady.Brian F wrote:It may not sell as many TV sets as the original showing.
Sure, after increase for the previous two years of 685,319 & 693,192 respectively, the number of licences did increase by 1,106,440 but in every one of the following six years there was an increase of between 1,123,747 and 1,254,874 as well.

I have two 'Coronation' sets in running order, both 'Bush'. The little plastic-cased 9" TV22, and the 'posh' 12" version with the real wooden cabinet.Brian F wrote:It may not sell as many TV sets as the original showing.
I'd love to re-create the Big Day, although I'd probably split it between them. Seven hours continuous caused the repair men some grief at the time, without the added strain of sixty years on the EHT windings.
I'd love a full 'as broadcast' copy. Will it ever get released?

Re: Possibility of Coronation repeat?
Incidentally, I finally got my article on the RAF operation to fly the Coronation telerecordings to Canada finished. A lot of backroom/committee wrangling, but there's an interesting element of subterfuge from some quarters, and a bit of drama on the day itself! I've pitched it to a magazine, but if that doesn't fly, I'll probably just put it on my own website around the time of the anniversary.
Previously there was some discussion about NBC's "Hot Kiné" process, and I believe that the photograph seen here shows the appartus in question (the film cameras aimed at the hooded monitors in the centre of the image).

It has usually been switched off for recent repeats.bbctim wrote:Shall we all pray for no BBC Parliament DOG?
Re: Possibility of Coronation repeat?
Have they stopped putting dates on these repeats as well? They used to be worried presumably in case people thought Ted Heath had just been elected or the pound just devalued.

I think you're right in that it's something of a myth, but there is some truth in it, even if the effect has often been exaggerated.Nick Cooper 625 wrote:The idea that the Coronation had such an effect in the first place is something of a myth. The one thing that is noticeable is that if you express the increase in the number of licenses each year as a percentage of the number at the start of the year, rather than in absolute terms, then April 1953 to March 1954 is the only year in that period in which that percentage increases in comparison with the previous year's figure.*

Re: Possibility of Coronation repeat?
That's certainly true, but if we took a mid-point between the increases in the previous and following years, instead of 51.6% we'd get 43.2% and an increase of 925,539 instead of the actual 1,106,440. So we can reasonably ascribe the 180,901 difference to "the Coronation-effect," although obviously it's not quite as compelling as the usual "more than a million extra TV sets" that gets trotted out.Simon Coward wrote:I think you're right in that it's something of a myth, but there is some truth in it, even if the effect has often been exaggerated.

By the same token, though, if you graph the perecentages, just as 1953-54 looks a bit higher than expected, 1952-53 looks a bit lower.
