Coming soon on Freeview Channels
Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
Looks like Public Eye on TPtv will be replaced with Lytton's Diary (Peter Bowles as newspaper gossip writer IIRC)
Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
Interesting, it's an 'Okay' series, helped along hugely by Peter Bowles, of course.

Ah...proper "Special Branch", great!
Forces TV have announced "Shelley" as well.

Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
Shelley must be the king of 'gentle' comedies always looked forward to that, although have no Forces TV at the moment.
Amazing how Hywell Bennett just slipped into a sitcom (with often lively audiences) role like a glove, after playing all those serious and sometimes psycho roles.

It’s amazing Shelley was such a mainstream hit when you think how a gleefully work-dodging graduate was hardly a crowd-pleasing stereotype in Thatcher’s Britain. I’m enjoying seeing it again, it’s so everyday and low-key, and I always loved Belinda Sinclair.
Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
Well the character was played with such cheeky charm by Bennet, and the writing was so strong from Peter Tilbury, that it was bound to be popular from the start.Simon36 wrote:It’s amazing Shelley was such a mainstream hit when you think how a gleefully work-dodging graduate was hardly a crowd-pleasing stereotype in Thatcher’s Britain. Aside from Shelley's 'Problem', he was a decent caring sort, and his constant observations of the absurdities of life, struck a chord with everybody I think ( they still do!).
It always maintained a high standard, despite other writers being brought in, but was at it's best under Tilbury.

Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
At last some electricary Touchwood on TP.
Currently enjoying Freewheelers IMHO forget the production limitations of the time because they really 'pushed the boat out' on this and tried ...(and succeeded in a bit of hokum and escapism for kids) and that is all that matters I reckon.Jerome Willis was a delight as the nutty Nero but hope someday we will be able to see Von Glieb.
Also enjoying Special Branch which I do not remember apart from the rather surprisingly dull (for them) Euston Films batch.
Like the titles and music and find it surprisingly engaging concentrating on the mundane cases that special branch would deal with rather than the flash, bang wallop cases.Wensley Pithey has real gravitas as the wise elder, guru type member.I think it works well in 625 monochrome and not sure if I will feel the same when it goes to colour.

Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
Totally agree with you about "Freewheelers", Children's TV budgets were usually miniscule, but they really did make an effort with series like that one, and it shows.
Also enjoying "Special Branch" ( even though I have the DVD sets), last night's episode with Mel Martin having to be sent back to Rhodesia is an excellent episode, good story and some great location work around London.

Excellent news about Mystery Imagination and Hazell.
Just to add some snippets.. on TP
20 OCT The Naked Civil Servant with good old John Hurt
1 NOV Vacant Possession, (been on before so may not be seen for some time again) a lightweight but amusing orphan episode from the Rediffusion series ' Blackmail '
14 NOV Remembering Merton Park Studios
15 NOV start of 'Overseas Press Club -Exclusive'. Which I think is a 1950s flash, bang, wallop adventure series from ABC uk?
If you're interested in science then London Live ch.8 continues with oldish Horizon episodes.
Space 1999 continues on the Horror Channel.
PS. TPtv appears to be omitting an episode of the wonderful 'proper' studio drama Shadows of Fear
..does anyone know if this was due to Ofcom etc concerns? The ep is The lesser of the two

Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
Perhaps something wrong with the "SOF" tape, an episode of "Shadows" was postponed till the end of the run, possibly the same thing.
On forces TV, two episodes of "Bless This House" were missed out from the first of the two 74 runs, might be the same thing again? ( ever since they have shrank the titles to message it's not the billed episode, and the recorded announcement doesn't correspond either).

There was an interesting conversation going on over at Digital Spy (which I cannot find now)...a couple of retired Thames engineers were admirably answering questions by posters....but don't recall anything said about those dodgy break bumpers LOL...apparently they were brought out of retirement to help engineer and transfer the old material ..something like that anyway

It is my understanding that a couple of episodes of Bless this House have storylines involving Marmalade jars...

Can't show Gollywogs anymore, even in repeats of old tv. They got rid of them in Enid Blyton in the eighties.
Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
I've still got mine!
The BBC fell out with Enid Blyton long before today's New Victorianism though. I never have known why.

Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
The BBC are afraid of some black civil rights activists claiming that even depicting a gollywog means that the BBC endorses racism.
Re: Coming soon on Freeview Channels
That may well be the case, although I'm more inclined to think that the BBC still has its own agenda on what it deems 'suitable' for its audience.paul.austin wrote:The BBC are afraid of some black civil rights activists claiming that even depicting a gollywog means that the BBC endorses racism.
Former victims including Bing Crosby, no less.
Still, it's not exactly McCarthy, thank God.
