"Jazz 625 For One Night Only"

Post by Mark »

A one off new edition of "Jazz 625", on BBC Four, Fri night at 9pm.

In B/W as well.

Isn't that typical?
I finally get BBC2, and they move it to BBC4 instead!

I'm surprised they didn't call it "Jazz 1080" if the new parts are in HD, though that might be a possibility if they have the response to do a new series, which I sadly doubt.

I think that would probably bemuse as many, if not more, people than it amused.

indeed I wonder how many people who will be watching this, or even involved in it, understand what the "625" refers to?

You have just found it on the set dial haven't you, should have read the instructions.!

Being in B/W is the big thing though, wonder if there will be any complaints?

'I pay my colour license and I get B/W, not only that but family members have fainted in shock, going back to yesteryear is dangerous, next thing you know, BBC and ITV will be showing some decent programmes on a Saturday night!

Quite enjoying it so far. Thought the b/w would be a gimmick, but it lends a certain charm. Not sure about the presenter to be honest. Not quite Humph/Steve Race standard to me. Seem to remember Jazz on 4 late on Friday nights when they started, but it was buried pretty quickly, IIRC.

Most refreshing to see a brief revival of B/W, great idea, great music too!

Always nice to see Cleo Laine, and her daughter singing as well.

These 'One Night Only' shows are very good, ( along with "Tomorrow's World") a clever combination of New and Archive material.

It was enjoyable to see the 60's clips (and discover about the likes of Wes Montgomery) in between hearing Jacqui Dankworth and Gregory Porter live. Can't really miss it if it's for one night only!

It would be nice if they repeated some of the original editions.

Had the pleasure of attending an academic gig about jazz on television with a focus on "Jazz 625" in Birmingham the other week. Dr Nicolas Pillai - who was behind the event and worked on the BBC Four broadcast - hosted a very enjoyable day, and we got to hear some lovely music and say "thank you" for a few people who have introduced us to some great sounds.

Nicolas has discussed his work here:

All the best

Andrew

Very interesting.

How about a piece on Jazz in Drama, obviously Alan Plater would have to feature heavily!
