"Drama Out of a Crisis" - BBC Four "Play for Today" documentary

Post by AndrewP »

Julie and I very much enjoyed this well-assembled retrospective. How wonderful just to experience solid content... effective clips, relevant speakers, sound construction, logical flow... That was a great treat. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it and you have an interest in TV of this period.

All the best

The key to the success of the documentary was the centrality of the archive. We were doubly fortunate; first that Illuminations were given the keys to the BBC Archive and were able to use anything, and then fortunate in the care with which they treated it and the imagination and 'deep archive' knowledge with which the extracts were chosen and used. I calculate that we got full-screen clips from 28 plays (plus Up the Junction), and a look at many more for illustrative purposes. Most viewers would have been left thinking, "This Play for Today was clearly a remarkable achievement. And there was so much of it!".
