Weather and news

Post by Brock »

Merry Christmas everyone. Just heard the weather forecast on Radio 4, which - very unusually - followed the news today.

Why does the weather normally precede the news on radio, but follow it on television?

It's only Radio 4 where they have it before the news isn't it? Every other station tacks it onto the end of the news bulletins.

Radio 5 Live has it before the news on the half-hour (and sometimes summaries before the news on the hour). I confess that I mainly listen to those two stations, so maybe they're exceptional. One thing that occurs to me is that they both use dedicated weather forecasters, rather than just having the newsreader reading out the forecast. Maybe it's easier to give a forecaster a fixed start time if it's before the news?

Sky News and BBC News Channel both have the weather before the news.

Not really, they have it at the end of the half hour/hour block of news.... It's just that the programme that follows it is another bulletin!
