"Thirty Minutes Worth"

Post by Mark »

With the upcoming DVD release of the surviving episodes of the "Here's Harry" series, I was wondering what the status of the Radio series was.?

Six episodes of the TV series were adapted for Radio in 1963 under the title "Thirty Minutes Worth", but I'm not sure which ones were done, except for one.

"The Insurance Stamps", which I have heard and IS an adaptation of a missing TV episode, from series 3 (19/12/61) but I'm not sure of the rest.

The two episodes I have of the radio version are Episodes 3 & 4, The Holiday and The Request (07th & 14th October 1963), adapted from TV Here's Harry episodes of the same names from S2 (2.2 and 2.3 aired 11th and 18th May 1961). Those TV episodes survive which is both good news and something of a lost opportunity that they weren't more now lost episodes adapted so we at least had some version of missing tales.

Not sure which other three stories were done or whether they survive.

Ah, very interesting, thanks for that.

So that's at least half of them still around, yes it's a shame they only did the one series, but if they do ALL still exist, perhaps 4ex could clean them up give them an outing to tie-in with the DVD release.

For completions' sake there was also a series of Thirty Minutes Worth on BBC Radio 2 in 1988, also scripted by Vince Powell like the 1963 run, which survives in full. I don't recall if these were further adaptations of 60s scripts or entirely new ones for the 80s as I haven't heard them in a while. Should dig them out!

Harry also had a radio series called Harry Worth on the Light Programme in 1967, 10 episodes scripted by Ronnie Taylor. Not heard any of these and don't know how many, if any survive. I suspect they were original radio scripts in the traditional variety style rather than adaptations of the later 60s TV series HARRY WORTH as Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson were regular musical guests.

Harry also did a radio series in 1976 called Things Could Be Worse, written by David McKellar & David Renwick, co starring Miriam Margolyes, 13 episodes, which survive. I have these and they are funny.

Plenty of material for some Harry Worth BBC Radio CDs or 4extra repeats.

Having dug out my copies I find I actually have the first four episodes and the correct order is thus;

THIRTY MINUTES WORTH - BBC Light Programme 1963
1. 23/09/1963 The Holiday (adapted from TV ep 2.2 11/05/1961)
2. 30/09/1963 The Request (adapted from TV ep 2.3 18/05/1961)
3. 07/10/1963 The Insurance Stamps (Adapted from TV ep 3.6 19/12/1961)
4. 14/10/1963 The Voice (adapted from TV ep 2.6 08/06/1961)
5. 21/10/1963 unknown
6. 28/10/1963 unknown
The Voice also survives as a TV original, in which Harry's new TV set gets interference from a radio-controlled taxi, which means of the four known radio survivors only one is of a missing TV episode.

The 1988 series of Thirty Minutes Worth is as follows;

THIRTY MINUTES WORTH - BBC Radio 2 1988
Starring Jacqueline Clarke, Charles Collingwood, Julie Higginson
Scripts by Vince Powell
1. *25/09/1988 Life Begins At Forty
2. 02/10/1988 The Doctor
3. 09/10/1988 The Camera
4. *16/10/1988 The Play
5. 23/10/1988 Agnes Latimer
6. 30/10/1988 The Alarm Call
*Eps 1 & 4 were not retained by the BBC but are out there with collectors.

And for 'Things Could Be Worse';

THINGS COULD BE WORSE - BBC Radio 4
Starring john Baddeley, John Graham, Miriam Margolyes,
Scripts by David McKellar & David Renwick
1. 15/09/1976 The Blackmail Letter
2. 22/09/1976 Take A Chance
3. 29/09/1976 An Englishman's Home
4. 06/10/1976 The Best Policy
5. 13/10/1976 It Never Rains…
6. 20/10/1876 Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot
7. 27/10/1976 And So To Bed
8. 03/11/1076 The 10:15 To Gatwick
9. 10/11/1976 The Wedding
10. 17/11/1976 The Visit
11. *24/11/1976 Going For A Song
12. 01/12/1976 The Coach Trip
13. 06/12/1976 All At Sea
*I don't have Episode 11, don't know if it is out there in collectors' circles.

Thank's for the extra info, four identified, but still only the one from a missing TV episode, that's a shame.

I'm familiar with the 80's series, but didn't realise ep 4 has had an outing, I'm sure 4ex will get round to it again though.
