Sweet Cigarette Cards

Post by Mr_Wolf »

An idle whimsy, given that it can be a hideously expensive hobby to pursue, but has anyone ever put together/know of a checklist for UK television-related sweet cigarette/cereal/tea/whatever cards?

That sounds like a thing that should exist, also possibly a good idea for a website.

And no, that wasn't the sound of me volunteering.

Not sure about a dedicated TV related checklist but I seem to recall - way back - finding an online catalogue (think there may also be print versions) of most cigarette card type sets. It was useful in tracking down the 'Space Patrol' set (which in itself was not directly related to the puppet series, sadly). Perhaps we ought to set up a rolling updateable checklist here?

This site contains many of the Murray Cigarette Card categories. There is a Murray catalogue that many people who collect these cards buy. Hope that helps.

There is a famous Space 1999 card set which has a card which was withdrawn due to its graphic nature. Reprints are on sale now though of that card, via online auctions.

I remember buying my Bassett Space:1999 set in the mid '80s by mail order from a guy called, I think, Cadwallader. Extreme skintness stopped me from going the whole hog but I remember him having many different types of sets for me to pine over.

Ah nostalgia...

The Golden Wonder TV ALL STARS set at £2.00 looks good value,
think I've a couple of these kicking around somewhere...
...remember these when they were issued back in the day
and can still remember the salt and vinegar taste of the wrappers :)

Would be very interesting to know what there was, over the years.

I have the Sky Ray "Who" cards, from the time, and a set of "Star Trek" cards form the early 70's (Incomplete though).

Wasn't there a "UFO" set..?

There were at least a couple - a photo set with Bassett/Barratt sweet cigarettes and some larger cards - which were an odd mixture of photos and art work - from Anglo(?) bubblegum. I have a complete set of the former, but only a handful (I think) of the latter.

Ah great..thanks for that.!

The packet is how I remembered it, and I might still have one or two of the cards somewhere, including the SHADO logo card.
