The Price of the Radio Times

Post by thebeekeeper »

Didn't want to start a new thread about the RT: I read on another forum claims that in some areas of the country the RT has increased to £2.10 .
Several weeks later my London edition is still £1.80 .
Is this true ? They usually sneak the increase in for the Xmas issue so this early is strange . Surely £2.10 would be a price too far ?

Specifically, the east of the Pennines, because I'm paying £2.10 for it in Yorkshire but my parents, who also get the Northern edition but are west of the Pennines, are still paying £1.80. Clearly although the North West and Yorkshire issues were merged a few years back in terms of listings, there are still distinct editions, presumably to allow for regional advertising (and price increases, it seems).

I am not spitting feathers about this because when I'm paying £2.90 for The Observer, I don't think £2.10 is poor value, certainly compared to other magazines of its type. There's absolutely no point comparing it to What's On TV, it's three times the size. Nobody chooses between them, they buy the Radio Times because it's the Radio Times.

It is £1.80 here in the good ol’ Black Country, although for some reason the local Morrisons and occasionally a local newsagents has both the London/Anglia/Midlands edition and a Yorkshire edition on sale.

You have to look carefully as I have inadvertently bought the wrong one in the past and wondered why there were so many programmes on about whippet-racing, tripe and how to put ferrets down your trousers...............:o)
If I were creating the world I wouldn't mess about with butterflies and daffodils. I would have started with lasers, eight o'clock, Day One!

While you can't compare the RT to What's On TV you can compare it to other tv listings magazines and at £2.10 it will be overpriced.
There seems to be changes in editorial content along with more RT merchandise too.
Since I read about the increase I've been looking at other magazines and while none are as good as the RT at £2.10 the RT just isn't worth it . I have a subscription so if I can beat the rise when I renew I may stick with it but it now seems to be trying to exploit its readerships loyalty.
It's not as if it actually contains any info that you can't get from dozens of other sources.
The annual 10p rise was acceptable but 30p in one go is too much.

It's certainly £2.10 here in Co. Durham.

People buy the Radio Times because it used to be the Radio Times, in the same way that they stay with British Gas, which used to be the Gas Board. Now that it has become a 'listings magazine', more and more people may well start to question the price.

Yes that's the main problem . They've made changes that are making it become just another magazine which is why £2.10 ain't worth it.

It's been a while since it went up by as little as 10p in a year - last year it was £1.60; in 2012 it was £1.40; in 2011, £1.20.

This time five years ago it was £1.10 - so that's a rise of 64% in that time (unless you live in Yorkshire, it seems, then it's 90%).

64% in 5 years makes it sound even worse .
Definitely exploitation of readers loyalty but I think this may stretch that loyalty to the limit

It's got to be on its last legs, that's a ridiculous price - the same as the double-page Christmas edition cost as recently as 2008. I'm amazed individual TV guides still exist outside of newspapers but can't see either it and TV Times lasting out the decade.

Then again, about six or seven years ago I confidently predicted the end of Blue Peter and that's still just about surviving.

Since I heard about the possible price rise I've been looking at other guides to see which one to switch over to.
To be honest , while the RT seems to be going downmarket slightly there's still a long way to go before it gets as low as all the other guides.
Even the TV Times is soap driven .
Several of the cheaper ones are really no better than the freebies in newspapers on a saturday so a complete waste of money.

In the long term, maybe a decade away I think the RT will close down unless it changes something . There is now a much larger price gap between the RT and the next cheapest so buying the RT is getting harder to justify . The most recent changes of the magazine "getting bigger" don't wash as none of the extra content is of any interest. Added presumably to soften the blow of the increase .
This means the Xmas issue will be £4.20 .
Not a chance I'm paying that- I hope I can renew my sub and miss this increase

I don't buy the Radio Times, but the stats show that it is far from on its last legs. Whilst it is nowhere near the popularity of the two most popular listing magazines, it is, after them, the third most actively purchased (i.e. not as part of a subscription or on-line) of any magazine (after three TV magazines it is Take A Break, Slimming World Magazine and Saga Magazine).

I think that's the point .
In an increasingly competitive sector it's still doing well but I think a price increase to £2.10 will certainly make a few more people than usual stop and think "hang on a minute".
Many buy from habit but there are limits to which that reader loyalty will go .
The main thing in their favour is that no other listings mag seems interested in trying to steal the readership the RT gets and instead they all target the TOWIE viewers who want listings as an aside to soap gossip.

Looks like they took the middle ground . Here the price went up to £2 . Still too much really but thankfully was able to take up their sub offer of 12 issues for £1 followed by a discounted sub that worked out at about £1.30 an issue , less if you take the preceding 12 for £1 into account so that's ok.
When the BBC owned it I never subscribed because they charged cover price and you only got free delivery but discount seems only fair paying 6 months up front.

I've put the posts about the current price of the Radio Times in their own thread, and cut the other stuff as it was off topic.

Price of the Christmas Radio Times since it became a double-issue in 1969. No idea whether there were any regional variations like the one in the North East that's been mentioned. These are mostly Midlands or London/South East editions.

I hope I've calculated the 2014 prices correctly. 2014 data corrected, I wonder where I got £3.30 from.

My 2014 double issue is binned now but I don't think it was £3.30. (If it was it would be the first time it was discounted- but I never looked at the price as it was on subscription)
Weekly issues were £1.80 at that point and the RT never discounts the Xmas issue which is always at least double the price of a weekly issue so it should have been either £3.60 or £4 which would reflect the price rise in January.

It hasn't for a while, but the standard cover price was fixed at 79p between late April 1998 and early April 2001 and so in 1998, 1999 and 2000 the Christmas issue was less than twice the price (by quite a margin in 1998). This was also true in 2001 where the standard issues were 85p but the Christmas issue was £1.65, but you're right that it hasn't been the case since.

I've corrected the 2014 data in the table.

RT is pretty much a Christmas-only purchase for me these days. While it's fair to say it's the least-worst of the listings titles, there's nothing compelling about it as a weekly buy. In any event, with today's stripped schedules, it's only two or three peak hours that vary on the main channels. I largely rely on the odd look through the Freeview EPG for items of interest. A little fiddlier than having the RT or a newspaper tv guide, but it does the job. I may miss the occasional good thing, but I can live with it.

The subscription price works out at about £1.30 which is acceptable.
I still have faith in the Radio Times at highlighting programmes of interest I may otherwise miss specially on the channels for which it does not carry complete listings and channels I would never even bother to look at on the EPG.

It's £2 for the London edition . Has it remained at £2.10 up North since last summer?
