Annuals and Content

Having read much about British comics' annuals recently, I was reminded that I'd often feel a bit cheated by many of them. Buying my usual weeklies, I was used to the one strip per page format. However, in many of the annuals - Whizzer and Chips/Whoopee types - there would be fewer panels per page stretching the strips over two or more pages.

As a result, even as a child, I could see that this was padding the annual out. I still enjoyed them but thought that so much more could have been included.

On the other hand, there were a few annuals that packed them in: the Dennis the Menace and Beryl the Peril annuals, although contained reprints, had the one strip per page. They weren't as thick as the main titles but seemed to have more in it.

Am I being unfair or was this just a way of making the annuals as thick as they were?

I agree! Even more of a swiz were TV related annuals. Some of the stories didn't even have the plain decency to be comics! They were generally very thin too - sometimes just 48 pages, often filled with superfluous quizzes etc.

Unusually, the five Follyfoot annuals were - aside from features - all comic strips. On the other hand, the Black Beauty annuals were - features aside again - all text stories.

Not an annual as such but comic book related.

If anyone's interested I picked up a copy of the hardback book 'When The Comics Went To War' in Poundland last week. It was a pound. Well, things are in Poundland, dontchaknow? This was in Wolverhampton, but I assume it might be available in other branches too....if they have any left.

Its an excellent book, and well worth a pound!

Poundland in Ayr also had a few going, I am glad I paid my pound.
As you said, a superb book I recommend to all here.
