After a 31 year wait....

Post by MDK »

I think I'm right in saying that for the first time since 31st December 1981, the ATV intro jingle will be broadcast on national TV tonight, albeit on satellite/ cable. See Series 1 of Bullseye on Challenge at 10.00 pm (assuming that is that Challenge have not cut it).

I say think because I could not recall whether it appeared on BBC 2's ATV Night in 1994. I also could not remember what happened with ATV produced shows that were repeated or broadcast after the switch to Central on 1.1.82 - I know the ATV end logo was retained on such shows, but did they replace the intros with the Central roundel ?

when Challenge did a game show weekend in the early 2000's they showed an episode of new faces & a " Charlie Williams" Golden Shot, the ATV idents were left intact

I believe it did appear, possibly several time? Not entirely sure though.

ATV Schools programmes generally had a still card of 'Central Presents' followed by the ATV ident from 1982 onwards for series such as 'Stop, Look and Listen'.

General ATV produced programming screened by Central (e.g. Sapphire and Steel Ass 6, some Family Fortunes etc.) or indeed ATV programmes originally screened by ATV and then repeated by Central the next year had the ATV ident replaced by the earliest Central one .. the repeat of the special 'Dizzy Feet' had a replacement Central opening ident and an new Central (c) 1982 end board replacing the ATV Colour Production card. It appears the archive masters kept the original ATV branding (S&S Ass 6 again ... see Networks DVD release) just that new transmission copies were prepared by Central for those 1982 broadcasts.

As has already been mentioned there have been some archive ATV shows screened on Challenge in the past .. 'The Golden Shot' and 'New Faces' certainly retained the ATV zoom ident.
.. ah yes, well worn carpets and the pungent smell of over-boiled vegetables!

Yes, I'm eagerly anticipating tonight's early Bullseye episodes, which I suppose shows what a pathetic life I lead.

Oddly enough, apart from including it set into a TV screen as part of the title graphic, I don't recall any "proper" use of the ident during BBC2's ATV Night.

Channel 4 had their own ATV night c1987 and that included The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, Edward VII, etc, all with ATV idents.

BBC2's 90s repeats of the ATV Morecambe and Wise shows included the ATV b/w ident.

I'm sure there must be other BBC/ITV examples ...
... and a right looking ponce no one's ever heard of.

"Tiswas Reunited" began with the zoom ident, if that counts.

I'm pretty sure that when Yesterday were showing Shine on Harvey Moon the early episodes still had the ATV ident!

Nice to see the ident retained again tonight despite having that horrendous D.O.G in the top quarter of the screen.

I can't believe how different this series was to the more familiar format! I remember Jim Bowen telling us, when we interviewed him for 'From ATVLAND In Colour', that it took a long time to bed in but by the second series they had got it more or less refined. The 'Bendy Bully' wouldn't arrive for another couple of years!

Jim also said that he believed the ratings for this series only improved because people had been talking in the pubs about how awful it was and that people were looking in to see if it really was that bad. The result was (as if often the case) it became cult viewing and a second series was commissioned - but not for Monday primetime. The second series would be shown in the now familiar Sunday afternoon slot.

The "Game Show Marathon" programmes on ITV1 in the mid-2000s were introduced with their original idents, zoomed into 16:9 of course but nevertheless broadcast nationwide, of which iirc The Golden Shot (presented by Ant and Dec) was preceded with the ATV Zoom 2. Good to see the original idents and endboards shown as part of Bullseye last night though. Only caught a few minutes but Jim Bowen appeared to be uncharacteristically nervous during the first couple of shows.

And, unless I'm very much mistaken, the end credits used a mixture of Gill Sans Extra Bold and Central's early corporate typeface, which could well have been one of the earliest examples of it being used onscreen. Anyone else spot this?

Repeated iirc on Challenge on Sunday, if anyone missed them.

I think the font used on clocks and slides - someone correct me if I'm wrong - was Futura Bold, but the two are very similar.

The ITV schools clock didn't use Futura, it used a very similar copy of Futura called Twentieth Century Bold that was designed by Sol Hess for Monotype between 1936-1947. Futura was designed by Paul Renner in 1927.

Twentieth Century has a lower x-height than Futura, which means Futura looks wrong on the schools clock.

Looking at this old thread I remember "Crossroads 30 Years On" txd on 01/01/95 commenced with the ATV In Colour zoom ident. It ended with the Central Production caption however.

I was very surprised to see "Shine on Harvey Moon" commence with ATV idents on "Yesterday". I guess it was one of those programmes made as ATV but shown as Central in 1982. I remember similar era programmes like "Family Fortunes" which had uncomfortable starts and audio fade ups following the Central ident to avoid the dying note of the ATV jingle.

On one occasion the Central ident was followed by a glimpse of the Central continuity announcer in darkness, on another occasion there was a pause following the Central ident, then up comes the last few seconds of the ATV ident!

Later series of these and similar programmes were made as Central of course.

In 1982 there was a "Best of British" season. As usual the ITV companies hid the original idents with new ones. The ITC material was txd as "Central Presentations". "TVTimes" went as far as to credit a '60s episode of "The Saint" as a Central Production! Speaking of that the"Queen's Ransom" one off episode shown was from a B&W print. Original break bumpers intact too.

I seem to recall the ATV ident getting a showing (along with others) on one of the ITV Anniversary shows in 2005, the 'walk of fame' one (Whatever happened to that!).

It may also have appeared on the "History Of ITV" series shown at the same time.
