Re: Morecambe and Wise jumping ship

It is dreadful. It says something when it’s not the funniest episode despite M and W being in it. Can't think of many if any performers that were given the number of breaks that they were, even Lew Grade tried to make them international, but it all seems to come back to the 6 or 7 years they were i...

Re: Journey of a Lifetime - Network release

Nice release. Wasn't it this series that Church goers missed some programmes, so copies were lent to them to watch? The copies were more for educational establishments I think, as it was not pushing religion but more a historical mini drama, travelogue. But obviously, the sites they were visiting w...

Re: Early Armchair theatre on videotape

It does indeed, and the tape even has some interviews beforehand - Bill Grundy interviewing Dame Sybil Thorndike (who had played the role of Mary Broome many years earlier) and both Olive McFarland and Robert Stephens (who were in the Granada production of the play). I've only seen it via a VHS vie...

Journey of a Lifetime - Network release

Just another mention for Network's rather quietly released Journey of a Lifetime 1961 An early colour programme from ABC. Not a preachy religious show but more of a thought-provoking travelogue around the Holy land and parts of the Middle East in more peaceful times (perhaps all the opposing sides s...

There is quite a few plays surviving on original videotape from 1967, would like to see a release of them. As well as a release of "after the funeral" (1960) and "the bandstand" (1964) which both Also survive on original VT the bandstand never being transmitted Not AT but Granada's Mary Broome play...

Re: Early Armchair theatre on videotape

Wasn't the play recommended to be destroyed due to its controversial theme about abortion? The ITA board of watchers had influential church members on it then, so they may have indeed been not amused by what they saw. So it's a possibility they had the power to say "no,no chuck it in the bin". Anot...

Re: Morecambe and Wise jumping ship

I reckon Morecambe and Wise were one of those comedy acts that relied on the audience being in love with the show ie so they could get away with most things but obviously the one thing love demands is loyalty and the move away from the BBC was perhaps seen as adultery LOL. Benny Hill for example, on...

Re: Early Armchair theatre on videotape

The 1969 season had a few plays I would have liked to have seen,
but the 1970 on, ones that were shown on TPTV I found a mixed bag of not bad - to creaky and dull.

They did not show 1970's The Others which I reckon would have been a good un.

I maybe wrong but I think Smith was also repeated during a later summer break ..maybe 76. I don't remember that and a quick search hasn't turned anything obvious up, but then searching for 'smith' you do get an awful lot of chaff with the wheat. If you find out dates / details I'd be fascinated to ...

Re: Early Armchair theatre on videotape

Re: Talking Pictures - more 'No Hiding Place' episodes

Ivor Dean was brilliant didn't recognise him till much later and I thought Det.Baxter was hesitating over the perhaps gory state of the murder scene, until that shout from somewhere LOL.
Nice lively print and sound even had the break bumpers although perhaps TP mistimed the first one if it was there.

"Going For A Bundle" was very entertaining and funny, better then the Papers one, reminded me even more of "Get This" and the fun, Fowler and Lynch had on that series.
I thought they were great, a funny double act - especially as James was thought of as a snooty, moody villain.

The first episode of REEDER was an ABC production, but was held by Thames (at the very least on a Philips viewing tape - which is where Kaleidoscope obtained a copy from). By the time the dvd release came round Kal’s copy seems to be the only one in existence. So probably Fremantle just doesn’t hav...

Re: ATV archive donated to the bfi

I think it will be a matter of the BFI drip feeding them as they only have a limited number of spares for their 2inch VT machines. So there is probably a lengthy evaluation process to ensure the tape goes through in one take without wearing/ damaging the precious heads. Apparently, TPTV could not sh...

TPTV are trailing "The Champions" for March 7th, taking over from "Enemy At the Door".
Hope they used the excellent trailer (not the one in the studio)

It is a big world as there seems to be a few TP viewers who have never seen it or vaguely remember it from a long time ago.
