Re: Josephine Tewson (26 February 1931 - 18 August 2022)
An excellent actress, so familiar in so many different roles. She was probably best known as Elizabeth in Keeping Up Appearances, but to be honest I don't think the character made the best use of her talents. RIP.

Re: Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
My apologies. I am slightly too young to remember Simon Dee on television, on either channel. I gather that LWT's The Simon Dee Show was a ratings disaster.Simon Coward wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 5:54 pm though note, that is Dee Time, which I didn't mention, not The Simon Dee Show

Re: Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
[publicizing chat-show guests in Radio Times ] Just like The Simon Dee Show. As luck would have it, Mark Gibbings-Jones has posted an RT clipping from 16 December 1967 in his latest instalment (under the entry for Tom and Jerry): "Simon Dee introduces his guests including Des O'Connor, Dick Sha...

Up until the death of Tony Selby last year, Get Some In! would have qualified (although there's some uncertainty about Gerard Ryder) - see this thread.

Re: Duggie Brown (7 August 1940 – 16 August 2022)
A very funny man. He was in so many different shows that it's difficult to know what to associate him with. On TV, I particularly remember him as one of the resident cast of comedy performers in 3-2-1 (the earlier series, anyway). But the main thing I remember him for is as one of the team captains ...

Re: Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
In Harty's case, this means the shows Eleven Plus and Russell Harty Plus , neither of which listed who the guests were going to be despite him being far less well known than Tim Rice was at the start of his chat show. It makes me wonder how shows like that ever got off the ground. Why would anyone ...

Re: Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
As Simon says, unless it was a really big, confirmed name special where all the stops were pulled out and there wasn't the remotest chance of a change, it wasn't worth the risk of guests becoming unavailable at short notice. That's true I suppose - you wouldn't want to advertise a big name on the s...

Re: Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
It's just the way things are (or at least were) done. Why? Was it some sort of contractual thing? Was it to do with production deadlines? Was it an attempt to surprise the audience? I genuinely hadn't noticed before. I think I tended to assume that if there weren't details in the Radio or TV Times,...

Re: Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
If you were to take a look at Radio Times listings for Parkinson , Harty and Wogan , I think you might find that failing the publicize the guests on Tim Rice's show was not quite so bizarre after all. But they were known quantities. Apart from a few episodes of Friday Night...Saturday Morning , I d...

Re: Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
Well thanks for that. I was clearly mistaken - there was a feature article in the RT. It looks as though the show may have been a victim of poor scheduling, if the above comments are anything to go by. And not publicizing the guests in advance seems a bizarre decision. I can see why it never returne...

Tim Rice (BBC1 chat show)
This is perhaps one of the more esoteric queries I've submitted to the forum. In February and March 1983 there was a late-night midweek chat show on BBC1 presented by Tim Rice and called, simply, Tim Rice . Here are the listings: https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/0/20?filt=bbc_one%2Cis_tv&q=tim...

Re: BBC100: The 100 Most-Broadcast BBC Programmes Of All Time
Learning that Phil Silvers has been on nearly as much as Dr.Who is a fact that I am having difficulty digesting. Oh that doesn't surprise me in the slightest. It was the classic "filler" programme - there was a period when it always seemed to be the last programme on before closedown. It ...

This series has got to be one of the funniest things I've read online for years (on any topic, not just archive TV), as well as being hugely informative. It deserves a much wider audience! Part 5: 80-76 - https://brokentv.uk/2022/08/07/bbc100-the-100-most-broadcast-bbc-programmes-of-all-time-80-76/

Orbit (BBC2 teletext service)
(I assume that teletext belongs in this section.) There was a brief period in the early 80s, I think from May 1980 to some time late in 1981, when the Ceefax service on BBC2 was rebranded to "Orbit". Here's a rare sighting from February 1981 - note that the header line still says "Cee...

Re: The ITV Job: The day when the BBC almost lost British comedy
You'd probably have ended up with a lot of writers getting no work and switching back to dealing with the BBC individually or going to other agencies. They may have been the second tier and quality suffered, but it may have opened up avenues that were previously locked out. Possibly, but it would h...
