PR: Rock Follies: The Whole Story [Network]

Post by Mr_Wolf »

Mixing music, dance, fantasy and drama, this multiple-BAFTA-winning series broke new ground in charting the ups and downs of a fictional female rock trio trying to make their way in a male-orientated industry.

Penned by emigre New Yorker Howard Schuman, Rock Follies brought the style of 1930s American musicals – and a touch of Weimar decadence – to the Seventies rock scene, casting a satirical eye on an often sordid world where burned-out Sixties idealism has given way to a commercialism that often crosses the line into exploitation.

Making stars of Julie Covington, Rula Lenska and Charlotte Cornwell – and featuring original music by Roxy Music's Andy McKay – this fantastically popular series has only been previously available commercially in an edited format. This release includes all twelve episodes complete and uncut.

Ooh! I suppose it's too late to squeeze on Censored Scenes from King Kong? It's a bit of an early draft of certain elements in Rock Follies, as was Armchair Theatre: Verite.

Great to see this one, getting a proper release.

I'd also like to see Schuman's "CSFKK" given an outing, too.

Does anyone know the nature of the edits?

I'd guess it was music, for copyright reasons?

AFAIK, there were two music edits (at least that's what I noticed compared to off-air copies I have from Australia when they repeated it in the 90s).

First was when Derrick seduces Anna and he puts a pair of headphones on her - originally the track played was a Led Zep song, but this was replaced on the DVD by some generic music. Second was in the disco owned by Dustin Gee's character (The Mermaid disco I think it was called). The music in the background was Get Off Of My Cloud by the Stones, but this was cleverly replaced by another generic track. I say cleverly because there is dialogue throughout and they did a really good job of retaining that with the new track. Having said that, if you listen very carefully you can still hear faint bits of the original.

Personally, I feel it's not worth buying these new DVDs if you have the original ones, at least not for 27 quid. That seems quite expensive, but it's probably because of the money they have to pay to Led Zep and the Stones in royalties! Wait until Network have a sale...

For anyone interested in the show, there's a schools programme on YT ("Looking at Television") going behind the scenes at a rehearsal for the second series, featuring interviews with the cast and Howard Schuman - it's in two parts at https://youtu.be/jhAnRY1nIFA and https://youtu.be/HFr5QkzVy4k

Well, I'm going to give it another go, despite having consistently turned it off at the time.
I'm not expecting any great revelation, but I've been wrong before.
